Marathon is going loud for Season 2! Nightfall doesn’t just add a new loot track; it plays with the whole formula. From experimental playlists to a defensive Runner shell and a horror-leaning zone that literally messes with your head.
Do not make the mistake of thinking that Season 2 is just a minor patch, since this is where Bungie starts bending Marathon into multiple experiences at once. Let’s dive deep into the details of the 2nd season.

Marathon Season 2, titled Nightfall, launches on June 2, 2026, at 10 AM PT / 5 PM UTC on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). Keep in mind that Bungie is kicking it off with an Open Play Week from June 2–9. This will let new players jump in for free and carry progress over if they decide to stick around. Though it’s true that beginners will need some help in the new season.
The season’s theme is escalation on all fronts. Tau Ceti IV is getting stranger, the UESC is less patient, and Nightfall leans harder into tension and horror than Season 1 ever did.
A seasonal wipe also lands alongside the launch. It will reset progression like gear, faction ranks, and contracts while preserving cosmetics. However, the sheer joy of hunting every trophy will stay the same.
New Experimental PvP/PvE Modes in Marathon Season 2
Nightfall doubles as a testbed for experimental playlists. It will give players new ways to interact with Marathon’s extraction loop. The big swing here is the introduction of PvE-focused and PvP-lite modes. This could influence future core playlists depending on how players respond.
The standout early-season mode is a PvP-lite experimental queue. You drop in with limited squads, fight UESC bots, and new PvE threats. You’ll have to deal with Rooks invading later in the run as the match tension spikes.
Bungie has also confirmed a full PvE-only mode coming during Season 2. This is built for crews who want objective chains and progression with zero player-versus-player pressure.
The Entry of a New Nighttime Zone Variant
Season 2 introduces Night Marsh, a nighttime variant of the Dire Marsh zone. This one ramps up the tension and leans into psychological horror. Instead of just flipping the lights off, Bungie built new points of interest!
Night Marsh also ties into Nightfall’s mind-warping theme. Players get access to new tools and threats to hammer in the Season’s theme. All of this is meant to test your team’s coordination and awareness. This will make every push deeper into the map feel like a calculated risk rather than a casual detour.
It will have a UESC observation platform, alongside environmental hazards and more aggressive enemy behavior. This will feel like a milestone zone, not just a reskin. Here are the core features of this variant:
- Additional POIs like observation decks and anomaly study sites
- Environmental hazards tuned for low-visibility play
- Night vision and flashlights to navigate darkness
- Debuffs like Psychosis and hallucinations that destabilize runs
All in all, it seems like Bungie’s goal was a horror-leaning space that marks a clear progression step for experienced crews. Only time will tell whether they succeed or not.
Marathon Season 2 Brings Sentinel Into the Mix
Everyone welcome Sentinel into the cast of booming runners of Marathon | Credit: BungieOn the Runner side, Marathon Season 2 Nightfall debuts Sentinel. A new defensive shell designed to control territory and set the terms of engagement before bullets start flying. Sentinel has been positioned as a space control specialist.
Sentinel is a shell that supports slower, more deliberate teams. The kind of teams that want to anchor chokepoints instead of constantly sprinting into chaos. Sentinel arrives alongside a broader sandbox refresh.
There are tweaks to existing shells, new backpacks, and stat-pushing gear that better supports defined roles like anchor, flanker, or utility runner. All of this is combined with the new Cradle progression system.
This progression system lets you sculpt your stat growth over time. Hence, the new Runner will definitely be a meta-shifting one. Since Sentinel gives squads a clear defensive identity, if they want to lean into that style.
New Weapons in Marathon Season 2
New season of Marathon expands the arsenal even further | Credit: BungieSeason 2 keeps the gun sandbox expanding with at least two headline weapons. The KKV-9SD, a suppressed SMG, and the D54 Battle Pistol, a precision sidearm with a built-in retinal optic.
These weapons are meant to complement, not completely overshadow, existing gear. The new weapons offer new roles and play patterns rather than strictly best-in-slot upgrades.
The KKV-9SD leans into close-range dominance with suppressed fire for more controlled engagements. The D54 Battle Pistol, on the other hand, fills a mid-range niche where mobility and quick target acquisition matter.
Both sit within a broader wave of sandbox tweaks aimed at making builds feel more expressive. Especially once you layer in Sentinel, Cradle-driven stat choices, and the new experimental modes’ demands.
