The Maple Leafs made the most of their time in the Phoenix, Arizona area over the weekend by visiting stricken Canadian-born college hockey player Matthew Mayich.

They spent part of Saturday before their practice at Mullett Arena in Tempe at the hospital where the Stoney Creek-born former Ottawa 67 has been since Aug. 20, seeing him and his family.

The 21-year-old defenceman remains in critical condition after a heat stroke-related injury during a heavy outdoor workout for Arizona State University’s team that deprived his brain of oxygen.

“The family is still praying for a miracle,” lawyer Rob Carey told the CBC last week. A school investigation of the intensity of the practice that day and its emergency response policy for its athletes is ongoing. Mayich was a 2023 late-round pick of the St. Louis Blues.

“It hits close to home,” Arizona-born Leaf winger Matthew Knies told Davis Alter of The Hockey News.

The visit meant a lot to John Mayich, Matthew’s father and a huge fan of the Leafs in the Wendel Clark-Doug Gilmour era.

Team captain Auston Matthews, raised in nearby Scottsdale, said “we are sending, our thoughts, our prayers and our support for (the family).”

In their private time with the family, the Leafs all wore T-shirts with Mayich’s image, his number 27 and ball caps with his initials and a yellow ribbon of hope.
