Makoto Shinkai’s Masterpiece Remains an Anime Landmark

[Credit: CoMix Wave Films]Nearly a decade after its 2016 release, Your Name still stands as one of Makoto Shinkai’s defining works because it was not only a commercial breakthrough but also a critical one. The film won major honors, including Best Animated Feature Film at the 2016 Sitges Film Festival, multiple Japanese Academy Film Prize in 2017, and the Best Animation category at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Animation award in 2016.
Your Name remains one of the highest-grossing original Japanese animated features of all time, with worldwide box office exceeding $358 million. It outperformed later hits like Shinkai’s own Suzume, which did break Your Name‘s opening weekend record by earning 1.88 billion yen ($11.76 million) in the first three days (via Mantan Web Japan). However, it couldn’t touch it’s predeccessor’s total global box office collection.
Your Name became a global phenomenon by pairing a high-concept body-swap premise with deeply emotional storytelling, and GKIDS’ own synopsis highlights the film’s central ideas of intimacy, distance, and fate. Unlike Demon Slayer or Chainsaw Man, which earned record-breaking box office success but come from the manga world, Your Name did all of that without having a prior fanbase.
For fans of Makoto Shinkai and anime film collecting, the August 25 4K Blu-ray release offers a timely opportunity to revisit Your Name in a format designed to better showcase the craftsmanship that made it such a landmark title in the first place.
