Fleetwood Mac guitarist says collaborating on the band's documentary has been 'healing'

Lindsey Buckingham says he and Stevie Nicks, his onetime lover and bandmate in Fleetwood Mac, have put an end to the feud that saw him get booted from the group in 2018.

The pair met in high school and started dating in 1972, but broke up just as Fleetwood Mac was beginning to hit it big.

Despite their rocky past, the exes continued to make music alongside Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and the late Christine McVie over the next four decades.

But after one dustup in 2018, Nicks reportedly gave the rest of Fleetwood Mac an ultimatum: Either Buckingham had to go or she was going to go.

“Stevie never wants to be on a stage with you again,” Buckingham recalled the band’s manager, Irving Azoff, telling him in an interview with Rolling Stone.

In her own response to his comments at the time, Nicks set the record straight on Buckingham’s departure from the band, saying: “I did not ask for him to be fired, I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself … And after many lengthy group discussions, Fleetwood Mac, a band whose legacy is rooted in evolution and change, found a new path forward with two hugely talented new members.”

‘Stevie and I are talking all the time now’

Fleetwood Mac continued to tour and replaced Buckingham with Mike Campbell, longtime lead guitarist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn.

But in a new interview with E! News at Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood event this week, Buckingham said the rock outfit has undergone a “healing process” while working on an upcoming Apple TV documentary.

“Stevie and I are talking all the time now,” he said.

“We had left things in 2019, maybe as far as I was concerned, not in a very good place for all the wrong reasons,” he said. “No one was happy about it, and all of that has been healed and worked out.”

The pair reunited publicly last year for a Record Store Day re-release of their first and only album, Buckingham Nicks. Now, Buckingham is hinting that more could be on the way in 2027, which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of their landmark record, Rumours.

“Next year should be a pretty interesting year,” Buckingham added to E! “I think quite a few things will reveal themselves.”

Elsewhere in his chat with E!, Buckingham reflected on Fleetwood Mac’s enduring appeal.

“There are groups that are quite popular in the moment, and maybe 10 years later, everyone’s kind of going, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,’ ” he admitted. “Fleetwood Mac was not one of those groups, luckily.”
