YOU ASKED FOR IT
Re “Signs of progress” (Brian Lilley, June 5): Seems the orange guru in the States is irritated with the anti-American rhetoric of some of our politicians. Does he not understand that with his repeated remarks about us becoming the 51st state he is going to get a reply that he may not like. I guess our replies mean that we are just fake news spreaders — not very American of us Canadians.

(There should be a distinction between anti-Trump and anti-American. Neither are helpful but make some people feel better about themselves)

OFF THE RAILS
Re “Poilievre debates Carney on high speed rail ahead of protests” (Elliot Ferguson, June 9): There can be no doubt the Carney government want to keep its large Quebec voting group onboard by pushing this humongous costly high speed train! Besides the cost, and that prime farmland and businesses will be destroyed along the route, there are other major concerns. Think of the billions given Bombardier over many years to appease Quebec! As Pierre Poilievre rightly points out, there are 13 vice-presidents involved who will be collecting massive salaries. As we have seen with previous Liberal projects, fraud might run rampant and massive cost overruns can be expected. Also troubling is Via Rail is directly involved in this mega project. Via Rail foolishly purchased new Seimens, Venture Trains which had been developed and used in warm California. Last winter whenever it got very cold, these new engines did not work and old Via engines had to be utilized. That does not bode well for Via Rail’s due diligence!

(In short, this is a boondoggle in the making. But the Liberals don’t care about such details, it’s about the votes)
