GREEN DREAMS
A pipeline to carry oil and gas, not water to supply Prairie farmers or northern firefighters. Debate to expand the Toronto Island airport, not add parkland corridors linking the mainland to underutilized island green space from November to April. Water is not a natural resource. Pipelines only create jobs if they carry oil and gas. A new airport runway will reduce downtown Toronto’s traffic, pedestrian and wildlife-related costs, not divert people away from it. I understand politics now.

(Ahh, the struggle for progress.)
FLIGHT OF FANCY
The proposal to expand Billy Bishop Airport for whisper jets is certainly a divisive issue. However, I believe the arguments against it are not strong enough. Noise, air pollution? Sorry, these already exist there. The smaller whisper jets are not any noisier than the aircraft currently in use. The airport expansion would certainly create jobs and allow business professionals quicker access to downtown.

GROCERY LIST
Re “Olivia Chow wants ban on ‘surveillance pricing’ by online grocery retailers” (Gordon Anderson, July 21): The big three grocery chains have been doing this for years: Sobeys/Foodland, Loblaws/Zehrs and Metro are in more affluent areas, whereas FreshCo, No Frills and Food Basics are in lower-income areas, selling the same products at a lower price. These companies trying to expand this to online orders is not surprising.
