MADE IN THE USA
Re “Best ‘n’ brightest bailing on Canada?” (Bryan Passifiume, July 3): Gladys Louise Smith, a Toronto girl born in 1892, was part of an itinerant showbiz family. In 1907, she adopted the family name of Pickford and moved to Hollywood with the Biograph company. By 1919, Mary Pickford had become the most famous — and soon, the richest — star of the Silent Screen and had earned the title of “America’s Sweetheart.” Since then, tens of thousands of Canadian entertainers have followed in her footsteps with Celine Dion being the most recent and most successful yet. The truth is that talent — and investment — will always flow to the market offering the best chance of success i.e. the U.S.A. Too many Canadians these day are unaware of our history and it seems ironic that the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy needed a “study” to state the obvious. Nobody comes to Canada seeking fame and fortune — they head south and no amount of “elbows up” or frantic flag-waving will change that.

(This is a reality many in this country don’t want to acknowledge. It is fantastic so many Canadians have found global success through the United States, but don’t come back here and lecture the rest of us to vote Liberal when you haven’t lived here for decades)

AMONGST THE PEOPLE
Charles and Camilla abandon Buckingham Palace, 24 Sussex in Ottawa is a disgrace, and the White House is being hacked to pieces for an ego trip! All this waste and insanity on the backs of taxpayers. Suckers all! Tell all these bigwigs to move to suburbia and live a normal life — and pay their own way.
