Re “Sneaky Dee’s avoids the wrecking ball” (Gordon Anderson, July 7): To liberal activists, every old dive is Toronto’s landmark. With liberals in power, nothing is ever going to be built. Catering to a few loud mouths and ignoring benefits for the majority is holding up progress to rejuvenate the city. That includes a 16-storey mixed building condo scrapped for an old greasy bar. How is the city supposed to grow and become modernized? We need a new mayor with a strong backbone to eliminate all that noise that’s stopping Toronto from real progress.

Re “Could new reforms finally clamp down on ‘catch-and-release’ bail?” (Michele Mandel, July 7): Judges clamping down? I wouldn’t hold my breath on that. The only thing that has changed is the onus. You can be guaranteed that defence lawyers will be using all the excuses in the book: ‘He is the sole breadwinner for the family,’ or ‘His mother is on oxygen and he’s the only one who can care for her,’ or ‘He has five siblings who depend on him,’ or ‘He had a tough upbringing.’ You get the idea. Judges will still continue to take into consideration mitigating factors like overcrowded jails and tough conditions, along with time that the accused will have to spend waiting, etc. So, clamping down, huh? Highly doubt it.
