Americans are seeing Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith on network television in the United States, and they are seeing a leader who they now think is Canada’s Margaret Thatcher. By garnering respect from Americans, Smith is using her previous television and talk-radio experience to advocate for Canada professionally. Smith expertly uses her knowledge of the American perspective to position Canada in the best light, to convince Americans generally that it is in their best interests to support Canada’s position. Thank goodness we had Smith working during her Christmas holidays to defend Canada, when our prime minister was off on one of his many vacations, skiing in B.C.

LET’S SHAKE

Let’s shake up things in Canada for a change. Pierre Poilievre unfortunately has Trump-like tendencies. Danielle Smith, the current premier of Alberta, should be the leader of the federal Conservative Party. She would get a strong vote from this writer and not a weak vote for Poilievre in the next federal election.

AU REVOIR

Re “No tears — or cash — for Quebec if it wants to go” (Lorne Gunter, Jan. 5): My grandfather wrote to Prime Minister John Diefenbaker stating that if Quebec wanted to leave Canada, let it go. Over the years, I have come to agree with my grandfather. If Quebecers want to be equal partners in Confederation, great. If not, we should not force them or encourage them to stay. We have already done that. I did not agree with much of what Pierre Trudeau did or said, but he did say that if Quebec can choose to leave Canada, parts of Quebec can choose to leave Quebec.
