In a development that will shock no one, there have been new leaks regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. It seems like we’re getting to know everything about the Switch 2 from everyone except Nintendo. This time, the leaks showcase new images of the Joy-Cons on the next-gen handheld. And it’s interesting.
The new leaks reveal a design that appears strikingly similar to the original Joy-Cons, and some fans have already started to question whether Nintendo even innovated. There are some obvious changes in appearance but the overall design is mostly similar. Maybe Nintendo has some hidden details like a fix for the stick drift problem under the hood.
We basically know everything about the Nintendo Switch 2 at this point
The leaked images first surfaced on a Chinese social media platform and were shared on Reddit by Redditor u/SwordfishAgile3472. The images appear to showcase a left Joy-Con with a matte black finish accented by a blue magnetic rail. Despite the updated attachment mechanism using magnets instead of physical rails, the overall design remains largely unchanged. Let’s hope this isn’t a recurring theme with the Switch 2.
— Stealth (@Stealth40k) January 5, 2025The resemblance to the original Joy-Con is undeniable. The leaked images show the same basic shape, button layout, and joystick positioning. However, there are a few noteworthy changes, such as larger SL and SR buttons and a third button speculated to release the magnetic grip. Some fans have already begun expressing disappointment over the similarity.
So it’s basically just an upgraded switch?
— Sniper Cam (@Sniper_Cam018) January 5, 2025After 10 years they look… the same
— pompino (@onipomp) January 5, 2025The joysticks still looking cheap ash, 100% drift again
— Kelix (@Kelexsis) January 6, 2025Huh. It really is just the switch redux.
— Will2Live😈 (@Demonator2009) January 6, 2025The transition to a magnetic connection system is one of the most significant changes observed in the leaked images. This feature could offer a more seamless and durable attachment mechanism, particularly in handheld mode. Additionally, the possible inclusion of an optical sensor could hint at advanced capabilities, such as motion tracking or even mouse-like functionality when used on other devices.
Nintendo’s decision to stick closely to the original Joy-Con design may be a calculated move. By maintaining compatibility with existing accessories and preserving the familiar form factor, the company could ease the transition for current Switch owners. But people who were expecting some big bold changes will surely be disappointed.
It’d be pretty funny if it just came out with no announcement
Interestingly, the leaked images also suggest the console has entered heavy production, as serial numbers on the controllers were reportedly validated through Nintendo’s official support website. This detail lends credibility to the leak and indicates that the Switch 2’s release is on track for its rumored launch in March 2025.
As with any other leaks regarding the Switch 2, do take these with a grain of salt as the final details could be very different. With competitors like Sony and Microsoft constantly pushing the boundaries of design and technology, fans may expect more from a company known for its creative risks. But maybe there are hidden features under the trunk.
The Switch 2 is rumored to be officially revealed in the coming months, possibly before the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year in March 2025. Until then, fans can only speculate about whether the leaked images accurately represent the console’s design or if Nintendo has a few surprises up its sleeve. Either way, we now know an awful lot of unofficial details about the Switch 2.
