With the new episodes of What If…? Season 3, it seems that the Multiverse has a way of rearranging the broken pieces of its puzzle. Take for example, while Jonathan Majors’ portrayal of Kang the Conqueror got left behind in the MCU, in the wake of his controversies, the animated show under Marvel Studios shockingly dared to tread uncharted territory.
In What If…? Season 3’s alternate reality, the iconic Time Chair—once introduced in the MCU as Kang’s overwhelming power—made a dramatic return. But despite bringing back the chair, Jonathan Majors’ character was nowhere to be seen. Instead, industry insiders mentioned that the chair was brought back just to elevate Captain Carter’s essence of heroism.
What If…? Season 3 brought back Kang’s iconic Time Chair
In a shocking twist of events, Marvel Studios’ What If…? seems to have outdone itself. Pushing the boundaries of its multiverse storytelling, the latest season of the show delivered a fascinating twist in the form of Kang the Conqueror’s iconic Time Chair. As revealed by @marvel_updat3s, Kang’s chair made a dramatic return in the animated series.
Initially featured in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as Disney’s Loki series, Kang’s Time Chair was introduced as a representation of his immense power and control over the multiverse. But then, as Jonathan Majors’ character was booted from the MCU, even the chair went out of existence, until What If…? Season 3.
According to the scooper account on X, although the decision to revive the Time Chair in the animated series was a bold one, it was apparently done to enhance Captain Carter’s journey and boost her essence as a heroic figure. And that’s why, despite Jonathan Majors‘ absence as Kang, his Time Chair returned in What If…? Season 3, elevating Captain Carter’s position.
Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror is no longer a part of the MCU
Meanwhile, as for Jonathan Majors’ fate in the MCU, the actor who was initially cast as the powerful time-bending villain Kang the Conqueror, was later kicked out of the franchise. Although Marvel had originally planned to turn Majors’ character into the next big baddie after Thanos, the actor’s real-life controversies ended up killing his character.
After being convicted of domestic violence charges in December 2023, against his then-partner Grace Jabbari, Jonathan Majors was booted by Marvel Studios to avoid backlash or gamble with the chances of getting canceled (via Forbes). Prior to that, although the actor had appeared in the Ant-Man sequel and Loki series, Majors’ career was doomed after the accusations.
However, after such extension and career-damaging accusations against Jonathan Majors, Grace Jabbari recently made headlines in November 2024 for dropping all charges against the actor. According to CBS News, Jabbari and Majors have reached a settlement wherein both of their lawyers agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice, according to a joint filing in Manhattan federal court.
What If…? is currently available to watch on Disney+.
