“Things are trending really strongly to participate there,” the 35-year-old centre said.

“Things are trending really strongly to participate there,” the 35-year-old centre said. “We’re just working through a few details with Hockey Canada, I obviously want to be playing for the Stanley Cup, but any time you get a chance to represent your country, you don’t take it lightly.”
The team is managed by recently fired Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and Tavares’s one-time Toronto teammate Jason Spezza, on loan from the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey office. Teammate and fellow world championship veteran Morgan Rielly is interested, too.
“Yes, always,” the defenceman said.
Logan Thompson, one of three goalies at the recent Olympics for Canada, told reporters in Washington on Thursday his workload needs some recovery time and he has declined an invite. Forwards Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome indicated they also will take the rest. There’s a chance Team Canada comes back to Leafs rookie winger Easton Cowan, depending how far the Marlies go in the AHL playoffs starting next week.
As for other Leafs, Matthew Knies and Joseph Woll likely will get consideration from Team USA, but Knies has been trying to rest a sore knee all season. Woll said he had interest, but didn’t want to distract from the Leafs on Thursday
Leading scorer William Nylander has been coy about joining Sweden’s team again, while plugger Calle Jarnkrok, at the end of his four-year deal in Toronto, declined interviews Thursday. He won gold at the worlds for Sweden a decade ago.
