Jason Momoa Leaves Fast and Furious Director’s Helldivers Movie

Jason Momoa has exited Justin Lin’s Helldivers movie, leaving Sony’s big video game adaptation with a very noticeable casting hole before its planned 2027 theatrical launch. Entertainment Weekly reports that Momoa will no longer star in the film, which is being made by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The project is still moving ahead with Lin, best known for multiple Fast & Furious films, attached to direct Entertainment Weekly. The movie is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers property, with PlayStation describing Helldivers 2 as a co-op shooter where players join elite soldiers fighting to protect Super Earth from alien threats. 

Gary Dauberman, known for It and Annabelle, wrote the script, while the film is currently set for a November 10, 2027 release. Momoa’s exit does not kill the mission, but it does make the next casting choice matter a lot more.

On paper, the film still has a strong spine. Lin remains attached as director, and the release date is still listed as November 10, 2027. But losing a lead actor can slow casting, stunt planning, marketing tone, and pre-production choices. That is especially true for a sci-fi war movie where physical presence, team chemistry, and visual effects planning all need to line up early.

There is also the fan angle. Momoa made sense on instinct; he has the size, humor, and gamer-adjacent appeal that could fit Helldivers’ mix of military absurdity and alien warfare. His exit means Sony now needs someone who can sell both the soldier fantasy and the satire without making the whole thing feel stiff. The property is still valuable. Reuters reported that Helldivers 2 sold more than 12 million units and became a major success for Sony’s PlayStation business. PlayStation also describes the game as a squad-based shooter where players fight across a hostile galaxy to protect Super Earth. So the audience is there. The question is whether the movie can reach that audience before the game’s heat cools.

Justin Lin’s Fast and Furious Past May Still Help Helldivers Survive the Casting Hit

Justin Lin is the biggest reason Helldivers should not be written off yet. Entertainment Weekly notes that he has directed several Fast & Furious films and also worked as a producer on Fast X, where Momoa played Dante. That is notable because Helldivers needs a director who understands teams, vehicles, impact, speed and personality inside big action scenes. Lin’s franchise history is not a small footnote. Fast X, which featured Momoa as the villain Dante, grossed $704.8 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.

Rotten Tomatoes lists Fast X with theatrical and streaming details on its movie page, along with its review hub. Even when the Fast films get silly, they understand momentum and ensemble rhythm. Helldivers will need both. The real challenge is tone. Helldivers is not just soldiers shooting aliens. The game’s language is full of exaggerated patriotism, “Managed Democracy,” friendly fire and absurd military bravado. PlayStation’s official page says players join an elite force to defend Super Earth and “spread the message of Democracy” by force. That can become hilarious, sharp and brutal in the right hands. In the wrong hands, it becomes a flat space-war movie with expensive creatures.

Momoa still has plenty on his slate. EW notes that he is expected to appear in the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, return to DC as Lobo in Supergirl, and reprise Duncan Idaho in the third Dune movie. He also appears in The Wrecking Crew, which premiered on Prime Video in January 2026, and is listed among the cast of the upcoming Street Fighter movie as Blanka. His 2027 slate also includes Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds, which Deadline reports is now dated for January 22, 2027.

Momoa leaving is a setback, but not a death blow. The bigger danger is rushing to replace him with a generic action lead who misses the strange humor of Helldivers. Lin can handle scale, Dauberman can build genre tension, and Sony has a game with a huge fan base. Now the studio needs the right actor, not just a famous one. What do you think?
