Fans are thus ready to kiss the usual clichés goodbye and welcome a lineup with new elements. With this fresh new approach, DC is set to seize the spotlight and keep Marvel racing to keep pace!

James Gunn Reveals Every DCU Project Will Be Its Own Thing!

On Saturday, James Gunn and the entire Creature Commandos crew took the stage at New York Comic Con to reveal the highly anticipated trailer. During the event, Gunn thus also shared insights about all the upcoming DC projects.

For the first time ever, he revealed what fans can expect from this fresh DC Universe. And it seems like Gunn is taking a new route, steering away from the familiar MCU formula that brought both its success and its eventual decline. He revealed that although all DC projects will be interconnected, each will bring its own unique flair to the table. Gunn said(via The Hollywood Reporter),

Every single project out of DC Studios is going to be its own thing. We want this to be very different from what Superman is going to be when that comes out. It’s a connected universe but we’re not imposing any overall aesthetic

Fellow executive producer Dean Lorey also elaborated on what Gunn meant by his statement. He said,

We were looking to do something that was sort of grounded, but with some style to it. It’s got a lot of really dark, dark tones. The palettes are really cool. But as you can see, it’s very action-oriented. It sets itself apart from, say, Harley Quinn and those kind of shows. It feels more adult.

Lorey clarified this in relation to the animated projects that the DCU has in store for fans. Excitement is through the roof for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Lanterns as well, fans are whizzing with excitement after soaking up all the thrilling updates!

Why This Approach Could Help the DCU Take Down the MCU for Good!

The MCU has definitely settled into a familiar track, with a predictable formula of scenes and a color palette that feels like it’s on repeat. But DCU is boldly strutting down a new path this time around! And this might just work for DC to get back on track after a series of disappointing projects in the past.

By allowing each project to have its own distinct style and tone, DC can explore a broader range of stories and themes. This means fans will enjoy fresh experiences that challenge their expectations rather than feeling like they’re watching the same movie in different costumes.

In a crowded market, especially for the superhero one, standing out is key, and DC’s dedication to making each project its own ensures that audiences stay engaged and excited for what’s next. For instance, in the MCU, many argue that Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy have the same aesthetic, making them feel and appear somewhat alike.

Additionally, the MCU’s reliance on humor has also cost it some points over the years; this need for humor in every movie often undercuts some serious moments. While this can be entertaining, it sometimes prevents films like Black Widow or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier from fully exploring darker themes, making them feel less impactful. Thus, here’s hoping DCU handles all this well and gives fans the universe they crave forever!

Creature Commandos will be streaming on Max from the 5th of December, 2024.
