Even though the One Piece storyline has entered the final saga, there are still a bunch of characters who have managed to remain a mystery. From Mihawk to Imu, these characters hold incredible importance to the plot, but still, Eiichiro Oda has yet to reveal their backstories and their connection to the central narrative. However, there is one character who beats them all.
This character is none other than Monkey D. Dragon, the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army, the father of Monkey D. Luffy, and the worst criminal in the One Piece world. While Oda has established his character in the story, he has yet to add more substance to it, thus keeping him a mystery all along.
However, considering the development he has received within the storyline, it is safe to say that he will probably have the best backstory in One Piece. So much so that it might harm his father Monkey D. Garp’s legacy and even make fans forget about the fact that he failed to save Ace.
Monkey D. Dragon’s potential backstory in One Piece
Dragon first made his official appearance during the Loguetown arc in One Piece. While his identity was unknown, he saved Luffy from Smoker and then went back into hiding. Later on, Garp revealed that he was actually Luffy’s father and is currently the worst criminal in the One Piece world, leading the Revolutionary Army against the World Government.
As the story progressed, fans found out a little bit more about Dragon, like why he stayed away from Luffy and how he was part of the Navy but left everything to revolt against everything they stood for. While there were speculations that Dragon was not Garp’s son, these speculations were cleared recently by Monkey D. Garp himself.
Still, there is a lot that One Piece fans don’t know about Dragon. His backstory, his future goals, his reason for leaving the Marines, and many other aspects that develop his character are still a mystery, and sooner or later, Eiichiro Oda is going to shed light on it.
Monkey D. Dragon’s past might put Garp to shame
Although Oda is hiding Dragon’s past for the finale of One Piece, assumptions can be made about what his tragic backstory may look like considering his current actions.

For example, the fact that he left the Marines and developed so much hatred for the World Government that he literally built an army to fight against them hints that they caused him some kind of major loss.
And the fact that his wife is the only missing person in his life suggests that she could be at the center of everything. It is safe to assume that the World Government might have something to do with her absence from One Piece, and it might have pushed Dragon to the edge. However, if all this turns out to be true, it will completely harm Garp’s legacy.
Should the presumption prove to be accurate, Garp’s decision to remain with the Navy and the World Government would demonstrate that he is the biggest sellout character in One Piece. Not only that, fans will also forget the hatred they had for him for not saving Ace and develop a new kind of dislike for his character.
