Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains spoilers for Invincible.

Invincible Season 4, Episode depicted a Thragg that was unlike the villain that fans expected. Equal parts childish and monstrous, while also displaying a maturity that came from a genuine love of his people, depending on the viewer, Thragg might come across as a Coalition sleeper agent or an inexperienced ruler trying to implement his vision of the world on his people, who are paying the price for it dearly.

The next episode is likely going to adapt the story that is in the next two issues of the Invincible comic, which is going to put the story at Issue #78. With the Viltrumites headed towards Earth, the season finale of Invincible might not be as big and bombastic as the previous entries into the franchise. However, what this show was able to do with all the original material has even left fandom veterans guessing about what might be in store for them.

Grand Regent Thragg Makes Nolan Look Like Season 1 Invincible

There seemed to be a lot of ridicule aimed at Thragg in the last episode. After being hyped up for one whole season, it seemed like Episode 7 was building up to a Viltrumite who might not be as worthy of a leader as the Viltrumites make him out to be. However, through its show-exclusive flashback and the fight that capped off the episode, it was clear that all previous appearances and mentions of Thragg simply did not do the character justice. While he might have seemed to be nowhere near as strong as Nolan or Conquest, the character treated Nolan as the latter treated Mark in the Season 1 finale.

Given that the character is headed to Earth, along with five of his strongest enforcers that have remained standing, it is difficult to see how Earth’s heroes could even remotely stack up to the threat that is heading their way. Even if all their strongest assets were on Earth, such as Tech Jacket, Invincible, and Omni-Man, and even if Cecil was able to join forces with Allen, the new leader of the Coalition, there is no way they would be able to face someone who could punch Nolan into outspace and gut him with zero resolve later. The only way Mark and Nolan survived was because Thragg was reeling from the loss of his planet.

The Fall Of Viltrum: Why It Makes More Sense In The Show

The highlight of the episode, titled Don’t Do Anything Rash, was Thaedus, Mark, and Nolan, following a beam fired by Space Racer, ripping through the planet of Viltrum, destroying the last stronghold that the Empire had. With most of the galaxy turned against them, Thragg hoped to unite his people back on his planet, so that he could launch a fresh assault on the Coalition and its allies. However, he was actually looking to dismantle and discard some of the greatest assets that they had. Though Thaedus was able to turn the tide, with help from Battle Beast and Space Racer, the matter remained that Thragg was not someone anyone could match up to.

Now, in the comics, the idea was pretty similar to that of the show: killing Thragg and the Viltrumites will scatter. In failing to do so, the monument that Nolan, Thaedus, and Mark decided to destroy was the Planet Viltrum itself. Here is where the show was able to use the logic that it had set up a lot better than the comics. The comic saw Viltrum being destroyed by Nolan, Mark, and Thaedus’s combined strength. However, the show decided to use Space Racer’s Infinity Ray to keep the power scale from breaking down completely.

Guided by Space Racer’s ray, which is able to penetrate anything in front of it, the trio was able to destroy the planet in a much more believable manner. Given what fans have seen the ray is able to do, it makes a lot more sense for the characters to share the load of blowing up the planet with the super weapon.

Does Oliver Die in Invincible S04E07?

It was impossible for Invincible to head into the conflict with Thragg and not be ready to lose some of the good guys. They already pulled the bait and switch with Mark after they fought Conquest. They even opened the following episode with a funeral, where Nolan looked all somber. Surely, they would not pull this again with another character?

They did. They absolutely did. Thragg made short work of Oliver, and then his father and his brother after him. However, despite the wounds all of them sustained, Mark, Oliver, and Nolan survived their encounter with Thragg. That was partly due to Nolan and Mark blowing up the planet, and partly due to the number of Viltrumites that remained. Thragg could not bring himself to kill Nolan and Mark because, despite their rebellion against the empire, they were Viltrumites, and given that there were so few left, Thragg genuinely seemed not to be able to bring himself to do it.
