Joan Vassos and Gerry Turner hit it off in The Golden Bachelor and were totally into each other to the point that it seemed that they were the ones for each other. However, everything came crashing down in just three episodes when Vassos revealed that she had chosen to step back from the show and go home due to a family emergency. She stated that her daughter had given birth at the time through c-section and was facing complications.

The morning after Vassos and Turner’s successful one-on-one date, she sat down with him to give him the bad news. Immediately as the words “I got a text this morning and I think I need to go home and be a mom” left her mouth, Turner broke into tears and so did she.

Turner, although heartbroken, was absolutely supportive of her decision as he understood the “moral compass” that they both have towards their families. He stated,

I understand. I get it. But I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. I was so excited this morning I was out of bed dancing. I was thrilled that we had a conversation like we did and there’s a moral compass that we both share and sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest.

Vassos echoed his sentiment stating that while she is confident that she’s doing the right thing by being there for her daughter, she also knew that she was “doing the hugely wrong thing” for her and Turner. Eventually, she sat in the black car after hugging a tearful Turner goodbye and left the show. The camera showed the golden bachelor breaking down crying with his head in his hands.

While she had a totally valid reason to hop on the next flight home, fans speculated that she was not being entirely true to Turner. Whether she was still not over her husband and not ready for a new relationship or was simply not into Turner, some fans believe that Vassos used her daughter’s health as an excuse to walk out of the show instead of turning him down and breaking his heart.

Fans also believe that since Vassos probably realized that she was not attracted to him as much as she would have liked to be, she didn’t want to take the chance from the other contestants who were into him. Clearly, Turner was totally smitten by her and it was possible that he’d choose her in the end. She simply didn’t think it would be fair to the other women, according to the viewers.
