Ice-T is one of the original gansta rappers and he helped pave the way for Hip-Hop to evolve from its break-of-dawn party roots into a more visceral portrayal of the harsh realities faced by Black Americans throughout the late '80s, '90s and the later decades.
Tracy Lauren Marrow (his real name) has had a blunt but always articulate lyrical style with unflinching directness on issues of race, discrimination, social injustice, and other political topics, balanced out with an outburst of humor or obscene storytelling.
His 1991's O.G. Original Gangsta introduced new project , an unironic thrash metal band fronted by Ice-T. would be the focus of a media frenzy for their 1992 song "Cop Killer," an unfiltered celebration of striking back at racist police violence that was so raw the band was dropped by their label over the ensuing controversy.
Ice-T loses his cool after a traffic stop
Ice-T has been on the spotlight in the last couple of hours because of the way he interacted with a police officer from the Hudson County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey, the actor's birthplace. The interaction was caught on bodycam during the morning of May the 3rd, 2024.
The footage shows the rapper upset with a cop during a traffic stop which ended in the celebrity receiving four tickets, including one for driving with an expired license and driving without a front license plate.
The cop runs the rapper's license and approached Ice-T in his parked car. Marrow immediately tells the officer that he is going to the DMV to "get my registration and everything straight on this car." The officer says that the actor's registration has been expired since 2021. His license was also expired.
"You don't got to be that serious about this," said the actor, who has starred in the NBC police drama "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" since 2000. He then suggested he park his car and walk to the DMV to get his new license and registration. The cop denied Marrow's request and tells Ice-T he is going to tow his vehicle.
That's when the rapper became frustrated. The officer demanded he hand over his keys. Ice-T got out of his car to confront the officer. "Give me back my damn paperwork," said Marrow. Both men were calling each other names before the officer returned to his police car to call for backup. The rapper started to record the argument..
Another cop from the Hudson County Sheriff's Office came to the scene in attempt to de-escalate the situation.
The sergeant spoke with both of the men involved. With the two parties separated, the officers decided to hand the rapper four tickets, but agreed to not tow his vehicle. Luckily for everyone involved, things didn't get past that.
