After 30 years since the release of his epic drama Legends of the Fall in 1994, director Ed Zwick sat for an interview with Vanity Fair to recall the production and behind-the-scenes magic of his film. Beginning the interview by stating how it took him years to get approval for his project, Zwick went on to discuss the struggles he had in finding the face for Susannah. 

According to the director, they were only four weeks from shooting when he found himself in a casting conundrum. Although Brad Pitt was already signed onto the project as Tristan Ludlow, the role of Susannah, a pivotal character in the epic tale, remained elusive. As per Ed Zwick, he and the casting director Mary Colquhoun were finding it difficult to cast someone who had the “combination of vivacity and sadness.”

We were only four weeks from shooting and still hadn’t found our Susannah. We read many wonderful actresses, but none of them had the combination of vivacity and sadness—in other words, manic depression—that foretold her tragic end.

Eventually, Ed Zwick witnessed something that forever changed the lives of two rising stars. Gwyneth Paltrow, a young actress brimming with potential, appeared during one of the readings. In her early 20s, Paltrow flawlessly exhibited the depth and complexity of the character, beyond her years. But more than anything, during her read-through with Pitt, the actress unfolded extraordinary chemistry that transcended the usual bounds of professional compatibility.
