Sonic the Hedgehog has been a cherished part of childhood memories for millions around the globe. Though the initial design of the live-action Sonic stirred up some mixed reactions from fans, the movies have gone on to become runaway hits at the box office. The latest installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, is currently lighting up theaters and exceeding expectations with its success at the box office.
But that is not all, it looks like the franchise still has plenty of speed left in it! Now, talks about a potential fourth movie are also happening, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Even Jim Carrey, whose performance as the iconic Dr. Robotnik has been a standout, seems open to reprising his role.
Jim Carrey shows interest in Sonic 4 following his return from retirement!
Jim Carrey takes things up a notch in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, playing not one but two roles! Despite being a key player in all three movies Carrey has never felt tied down by the franchise. He’s made it clear he’ll only return if the project is exciting enough to spark his interest.
After the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey hinted at retirement, joking that he’d only come back for a script “written in gold ink by angels.” Well, it seems the angels delivered, because he is back in top form for the third installment.
On top of that, Paramount has officially announced a fourth Sonic movie set to hit theaters in Spring 2027 (via Variety). And as for Carrey? He’s game to return as long as the story keeps him intrigued, and they keep calling him back. He said to Cinema Today,
Sonic 4 is definitely happening, but it seems the Angels will need to double their efforts to craft something extraordinary to keep Jim Carrey intrigued for a fourth outing. And if that doesn’t do the trick, you can bet Paramount will pull out all the stops to win him over!
How much did Jim Carrey earn from Sonic the Hedgehog 3?
Paramount clearly knows a thing or two about persuading Jim Carrey. During the promotions for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the actor casually announced his retirement from acting. Cut to now, and not only is he back, but he’s pulling double duty with two roles in Sonic 3! So, was a script “written in gold ink by angels” really enough to lure him back?
Apparently, Paramount sweetened the deal with more than just hiring angles to write the script. According to Showbiz Galore, Carrey reportedly walked away with a cool $12 million for his performance. While the exact number remains unconfirmed, splashing out that kind of cash to bring a superstar like Carrey out of retirement seems like a justifiable price to pay.
Jim Carrey, speaking with the Associated Press, cheekily confirmed that it was, in fact, the paycheck that coaxed him out of his brief retirement. As he put it,
According to Collider, the movie has already crossed $150 million at the domestic box office and is nearing a $250 million haul worldwide. With numbers like that, bringing Carrey back for a fourth film shouldn’t be a problem for the studio!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now playing in the theaters.
