The singer reportedly fell from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires. The staff of the hotel gave an emergency call to the police before his death complaining about aggressive behavior in the room (via Reuters).
Payne’s boy band One Direction had been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016, after the departure of member Zayn Malik. Payne had spoken about Malik’s decision to leave and had reportedly made several comments about the Pillow Talk singer’s exit, which had courted controversy (via NY Post).

A clip from the concert documentary This Is Us sees Payne and Malik hugging goodbye as they leave for a flight. When Payne wishes him a great flight, Zayn Malik can be heard saying,
I’ll try but I’ll miss you too much Liam.
The moment from the documentary will forever be etched in fans’ hearts as it shows a time when the two seemed to genuinely care for each other. According to the NY Post, Liam Payne had accused a band member of pinning him up to a wall backstage which many speculated to be Zayn Malik.

Hence, Liam Payne’s death at the young age of 31 came as a blow to the entire world. The band posted a tribute to the singer on their official page and gave their condolences while individual members took to their social media to remember their bandmate. Zayn Malik posted a photo of the two when they were young and wrote (via Instagram),
Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me, I can’t help but think selfishly that there were so many more conversations for us to have in our lives…Even though you were younger than me you were always more sensible than me you were headstrong, opinionated, and gave no f–ks about telling people when they were wrong. Even though we butted heads because of this a few times, I always secretly respected you for it.
The From Dusk Till Dawn singer also called him a brother and hoped that he was at peace.
