SUMMARY

  • ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 was announced as the final chapter, filmed alongside Season 2, and set for release in 2025.
  • Despite this, the 'Squid Game' universe will reportedly continue, with an English-language remake being developed under David Fincher.
  • Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk supports the remake and might contribute as an advisor or co-creator.

Squid Game, the deadliest game to ever exist is back and it is nothing short of a rollercoaster. Turning childhood nostalgia lethal, season two is increasing the stakes like never before. With new games, fresh faces, and darker twists, the survival game has officially turned into a gladiator arena. Alliances will crumble, friendships will be tested and the blood-soaked chaos will eventually extend into a third season.

However, the Squid Game saga isn’t ending after a third season, no. After all, the golden egg-laying hen is too precious to say goodbye to, isn’t it? As it turns out, an English-language version of the series is set to be developed with none other than the Se7en director, David Fincher, as the mastermind.

Squid Game was supposed to be a three-season-long thing. Back in July, Netflix announced that third season, which was filmed simultaneously with the second, will put an end to the terror. However, the universe is not ready to part ways with the unique storyline just yet.

Series creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confided in The Wrap that the Squid Game universe is far from over. He revealed that Netflix has a plan for the series’ future and also stated that an English-language version of the show is being developed.

In his words, “I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this away.” Deadline was the first to report this news as well as the involvement of David Fincher in the remake.

As for Hwang, he stated that his contribution to the Squid Game universe might not end with season 3. He said, “Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the ‘Squid Game’ universe.” It all remains to be seen.

While some creators might not be too happy with the entertainment industry taking advantage of their project’s popularity to create a whole new world for it, Hwang seems to be perfectly okay handing the reins over to Fincher.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ last month, Hwang stated that while he didn’t know if the remake was official yet or not, he’s excited to see how it turns out.

As a huge fan of Fincher, Hwang said,

I’ve also read news about David Fincher taking on a spin-off of Squid Game, and it isn’t something that’s been shared with me officially, so it’s tricky to comment. But having said that, as a big fan of David Fincher, you know, I hugely respect a lot of his work. If he actually were to do the spin-off of ‘Squid Game’, I personally, as a fan, I am very excited to see what happens. You know, I can’t wait to see what he has in store.

While Fincher hasn’t admitted to anything either, his filmography is a testament to his skills and honestly, a remake with him leading the team might not be the worst thing to happen.

Squid Game will come to an end with season three, which will be released sometime in 2025.

Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
