Chris Evans is best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which made him one of the most loved action heroes in Hollywood. Even with such humungous success in the franchise, Evans has been open to trying out a variety of projects.
However, they haven’t been as successful as the movies that featured him as Captain America. While his MCU legacy continues to shine, can the actor prove his mettle without the backing of his multi-million dollar superhero movies?
The star-studded cast of Sacrifice also features Chris Evans
Chris Evans’ latest venture is Sacrifice, a highly anticipated film that might help reignite his career in non-Marvel projects. Roman Gavras is the creative brain behind this movie, who co-wrote and directed the project.
The story happens to be a loose retelling of Joan of Arc’s lore and is set in a high-end charity gala that gets looted by a group who follow a mystical prophecy. Here’s what Gavras had to say about Sacrifice in an interview with Deadline.
In the lead, we have Anya Taylor-Joy as Joan, who aims to fulfill her prophecy by taking three hostages and one of them is Evans, a movie star, destined to die. Other members of the ensemble are Salma Hayek and Brendan Fraser, two supremely talented people who further increase the movie’s appeal.
Can Chris Evans revive his career outside the MCU?
Chris Evans’ post-Captain America career didn’t soar as high as his unparalleled MCU success. In 2023, he starred in Ghosted, an action comedy opposite Ana de Armas, that underperformed according to the critics but was slightly more favored by the audience. But his 2024 release, Red One, turned out to be even more disappointing.
The action movie was based around Christmas and had a star-studded cast that also included Dwayne Johnson. It had a hefty budget of more than $250 million but only made $34.1 million in the USA, its opening weekend (via People). Once again, the critics slammed the movie but the audience rated it might be higher.
Another one of his movies that had a lukewarm reception was The Gray Man, directed by the Russo brothers. Evans appeared as an antagonist in the film, but the script and pacing were not up to the mark. Pain Hustlers, the crime drama where he essayed Pete Brenner, a pharmaceutical executive turned out to be a disaster as per the critics.
Lightyear, where the actor voiced the titular character Buzz Lightyear, the astronaut toy, turned out to be another failure that received negative reviews.
But Sacrifice is a great opportunity for Evans to finally break free from the shadow of his Captain America role. If all goes well, the actor will be able to prove that he’s serious about his craft and has a depth and range that goes beyond the superhero genre. If successful, the movie will not only revive his image but establish him as a versatile leading man in Hollywood.
