Toph Beifong is one of the most important characters in Aang’s story in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Her character brought forth a kind of energy in the series that had been missing in the first season. Up until her introduction into the animated series, all the other characters had just been treating Aang like he was fragile. On the other hand, with the life that she had led and the challenges she had faced, she was much tougher on him.

Having grown up watching it and rewatching it several times over the years, it has become a very big part of her life. She also revealed that the earthbender had always been her favorite character, making her casting in the role almost meant to be.

I grew up watching the animated series. I’ve always been such a big fan and probably watched it 10 times all the way through. Toph was always my favorite character, so as soon as the casting notice came out, I begged my team to please get me an audition,

With this in mind, when a casting call was put out for Toph’s character and auditions began, she knew that she had to at least give it a shot. Cech confessed that as soon as the announcement was made, she ended up begging her agents to try and get her an audition for the same.

The Training Has Already Begun

Miya Cech then went on to talk about how she has been training for her role since being cast in the second season of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. There are several things that the actress is going to have to learn to ace the role of Toph, with one of the most prominent being doing the earth-bending and combat side of her character right.

During the interview, she mentioned that she has always kept quite regular with her martial arts skills. However, she has been attending a ‘boot camp’ for her character to understand and mimic all of her body movements in the animated series.

I’ve been in boot camp for about a week and a half now and still have a lot of work to do, but it’s super fun. I have some martial arts experience. I have a great instructor who I take private classes with back home in Northern California, and he keeps me in shape when I’m not working. I also have some dance experience from when I was younger that has been very helpful as I learn about Toph’s movements.

While her combat skills are very important, one of the biggest parts of Toph’s character is the fact that she is blind. It dictates the majority of her personal conflicts and even has a great effect on her power, with her enhanced senses allowing her to have a better understanding of her surroundings and gaining the unique ability of seismic sense.
