Daemon Targaryen’s Death Occurs During Battle Above the Gods Eye

House of the Dragon will conclude after four seasons, and one of the key events fans will be looking forward to is Daemon’s duel with Aemond above the Gods Eye. During the rigorous battle, both will face their imminent deaths, along with their dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar.

Martin’s Fire & Blood reveals that after learning Aemond has been ravaging the Riverlands, Daemon deliberately remains at Harrenhal, knowing his nephew will eventually come looking for him. As expected, Aemond arrives atop the ancient dragon Vhagar, eager to settle their long-standing rivalry once and for all.

Despite being heavily outmatched by Vhagar’s size and strength, Daemon mounts Caraxes and flies out to meet his opponent above the Gods Eye. The two dragons collide in a ferocious aerial battle, tearing into each other with claws, teeth, and dragonfire as they spiral through the sky.

At the height of the fight, Daemon unfastens himself from his saddle and leaps from Caraxes onto Vhagar in one of the boldest acts in Targaryen history. Wielding the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister, he drives the blade through Aemond’s remaining eye, killing the prince before either of them reaches the water.

Locked together, Caraxes and Vhagar crash into the Gods Eye, with the impact proving fatal for both dragons. Aemond’s body is later recovered still chained to Vhagar’s saddle, confirming how the duel ended. Daemon’s body is never found, leaving behind one of the greatest mysteries in the lore and ensuring his final stand becomes a legendary tale remembered throughout Westeros.

Why House of the Dragon Needs to Follow Daemon’s Book Death

House of the Dragon has never been a page-for-page adaptation of Fire & Blood. It expanded character arcs, changed storylines, and altered key events to better suit a television adaptation.

While some of those changes have strengthened the series, there have been a lot of modifications that even Martin had to walk away from the show because it didn’t feel like it was his story anymore.

This is why Daemon’s death during the Battle Above the Gods Eye is one event HBO cannot afford to significantly alter. The duel is the payoff to Daemon and Aemond’s rivalry, a conflict the series has been carefully building since Aemond claimed Vhagar and the two emerged as mirrored versions of one another. It is also one of the most famous scenes in Fire & Blood, with Daemon’s leap from Caraxes onto Vhagar and his killing of Aemond becoming a defining piece of Targaryen legend.

Removing or drastically changing these moments would undercut years of narrative setup while denying viewers one of the franchise’s most anticipated spectacles. By faithfully adapting the Battle Above the Gods Eye, House of the Dragon can deliver an emotional, thematic, and visual payoff that both the story and its audience have been building toward since the series began.
