House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6 Ending Explained: Is Criston Cole Really Dead?

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6 kills Ser Criston Cole before the opening credits have much time to breathe, uncovers five forgotten Dreamfyre eggs beneath Harrenhal, and leaves Lord Corlys Velaryon’s survival uncertain after another Hightower attack. House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 had already stranded Cole in the Riverlands after Ser Gwayne Hightower abandoned his increasingly suicidal campaign. Aemond Targaryen was recovering under Alys Rivers’ care, Alicent Hightower was attempting to escape with the pregnant Helaena Targaryen, and Rhaenyra Targaryen was losing Gold Cloaks to Lord Ormund Hightower’s agents.

Episode 6 punishes almost every person who mistakes stubbornness for loyalty. Cole receives the glorious last stand he wanted, except nobody agrees to fight him fairly. Alys hands Aemond a possible dragon dynasty, and Rhaenyra retaliates against Tumbleton with a scheme that ends with Corlys lying beneath Hightower blades. Westeros has moved past warning shots. 

Criston Cole Gets the Death He Chose

Yes, Criston Cole is dead in House of the Dragon Season 3. Cole and his remaining soldiers enter an abandoned Tully camp during the Butcher’s Ball, only to discover that the apparent corpses are living Rivermen waiting to attack. He survives the first assault and challenges Oscar Tully and Roderick “Roddy the Ruin” Dustin to fight him together. Cole ties Alicent’s favour around his sword and prepares a speech worthy of a warrior who still thinks history is listening. Alysanne “Black Aly” Blackwood answers with arrows. She shoots him before the duel can begin, and the surrounding army finishes his men. 

The series changes his book death, where three archers kill him after his offer of single combat is rejected. Giving the fatal shots to Black Aly lets another memorable Fire & Blood figure announce herself with brutal efficiency. I expected Cole to die fighting, but this ending suits him better. He spent years reshaping resentment into duty and violence into honour. His enemies refuse to participate in that fantasy. Fabien Frankel still gives him a strangely mournful final expression, which makes the death sadder than the character deserves.

Alicent Becomes Rhaenyra’s Harrenhal Weapon

Alicent and Helaena are rescued from the tunnel beneath the Red Keep, ending their attempted escape before it begins. Rhaenyra responds by restricting their movement, though Helaena’s pregnancy remains the more dangerous secret. Helaena’s embroidery depicts a wounded Aemond at Harrenhal with a woman standing over him. Alicent admits her daughter is a dreamer, and Rhaenyra takes the possibility seriously because Daenys Targaryen foresaw the Doom of Valyria.

Rhaenyra sends Alicent to Harrenhal to confirm Aemond’s presence, knowing he is less likely to suspect his mother. The mission also threatens to turn Alicent into the assassin Helaena’s vision may have anticipated. I kept waiting for Alicent to refuse, but protecting Helaena has become the last principle she follows without hesitation. Mysaria’s behaviour deserves suspicion as well. She conceals Alicent’s earlier escape attempt from Rhaenyra and orders the witness removed, suggesting that her loyalty has become conditional.

Alys Offers Aemond Five Dreamfyre Eggs

Aemond wants to leave Harrenhal and find Vhagar, but Alys argues that the dragon may be keeping her distance to protect him. When a stable boy recognises Aemond, Alys kills the child and demonstrates how far she will go to preserve their refuge. She then opens a chest containing five dragon eggs laid by Dreamfyre, the dragon currently bonded with Helaena. Alys explains that Dreamfyre produced the clutch when her former rider, the original Rhaena Targaryen, lived at Harrenhal roughly a century earlier. 

Rhaena was the granddaughter of Aegon the Conqueror and withdrew to Harrenhal after losing her daughter Aerea. Dreamfyre later returned to King’s Landing, while these eggs apparently remained hidden inside the castle. One egg warms in Aemond’s hand, and Alys offers him a future at Harrenhal with dragons, children, and power independent of either Green or Black rule. Their kiss confirms that Aemond is tempted. Alys wants him to stop chasing the throne and begin a dynasty with her, although trusting her after the stable boy’s murder seems like a choice only Aemond would call romantic.

Are These Daenerys Targaryen’s Dragon Eggs?

The episode does not confirm that Dreamfyre’s five Harrenhal eggs become the three given to Daenerys Targaryen centuries later. George R.R. Martin’s history strongly connects Daenerys’ eggs to Dreamfyre through Elissa Farman, who stole three eggs during King Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s reign and sold them in Essos. The television adaptation has altered the egg history before, so the newly discovered clutch creates another possible route. 

For now, they belong to Alys and Aemond’s plans. The number five also suggests that some could hatch, be destroyed, or disappear into Essos before Game of Thrones begins.

Tumbleton Is Breaking Everyone Around It

Gwayne reaches Tumbleton and warns Prince Daeron Targaryen that Ormund is using him. Daeron understands the manipulation but lacks the authority to remove the man commanding his army. Rhaenyra sends disguised soldiers into Tumbleton wearing Baratheon armour, but Gwayne detects the deception and prevents Ormund and Daeron’s assassination. Ormund retaliates against Corlys and the Velaryon forces.

Ulf the White also abandons his assigned position and clashes with Daemon in King’s Landing, while Hugh Hammer considers escaping with Kat. Their dissatisfaction is preparing the ground for the betrayal associated with Tumbleton in Fire & Blood. The show has made that turn less sudden by showing how Rhaenyra’s dragonriders resent being treated as disposable weapons.

House of the Dragon Season 3 episode 6 ends with Rhaenyra receiving the bloodied Baratheon disguise and Ormund’s warning: “Kick this dog and it will bite your hand.” Hightower soldiers ambush Corlys and his men, but the episode does not provide an unmistakable onscreen confirmation of Corlys’ death. His collapse makes the attack look fatal, yet his book history and the decision to withhold a body leave capture or severe injury possible. 

Ormund’s retaliation removes or incapacitates one of Rhaenyra’s most experienced advisers and places Alyn of Hull under enormous pressure. If Corlys survives, he may become a hostage. If he dies, Alyn and Addam will have every reason to attack Tumbleton, which may be exactly what Ormund wants.

I loved Cole’s undignified death and the Dreamfyre surprise, but the episode’s crowded structure barely allows either development to settle. The eggs could reshape the war, while Corlys’ apparent fall could fracture Rhaenyra’s council. Which secret will cause greater damage, Alys’ hidden dragons or Mysaria’s hidden alliance?
