House of the Dragon Recap: What to Remember Before Season 3 Drops

After two seasons of fire and blood, House of the Dragon has left the Targaryen civil war on the brink of all-out destruction. Season 2 ended with major alliances forming, dragons preparing for battle, and both sides of the Dance of the Dragons suffering painful losses.

As Season 3 approaches, the struggle between the Blacks and the Greens is set to escalate into the deadliest phase of the conflict. Political loyalties are shifting, new players are rising, and no victory comes without a devastating cost. Before the next chapter arrives, here’s everything you need to remember from the chaos so far.

How Did Team Black Gain More Dragonriders?

In a desperate attempt to strengthen their forces, Team Black resorted to a decision that would soon carry serious consequences. In Episode 7’s brutal “Sowing of the Seeds” sequence, Rhaenyra recruited dragonseeds — bastards and descendants of Targaryens with Valyrian blood — to try to claim Vermithor.

Hugh Hammer successfully bonded with the massive bronze dragon. Meanwhile, Ulf White accidentally stumbled upon Silverwing deep within Dragonstone and earned the dragon’s acceptance. Addam of Hull had already been chosen by Seasmoke in Episode 6, after the dragon tracked him down on Driftmark.

By the end of the season, Team Black had added Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing to its ranks.

What Happened to Daemon In Harrenhal?

Daemon’s time at Harrenhal finally came to a head in the Season 2 finale when Alys Rivers led him to the godswood and urged him to touch the weirwood tree. As soon as he did, Daemon experienced a series of visions, including Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, Helaena speaking cryptically to him, and glimpses of a dark future that threatened all of Westeros.

The vision forced him to confront the idea that his personal ambition mattered less than the larger fate of House Targaryen and the realm. When Rhaenyra arrived at Harrenhal expecting a confrontation, she instead found Daemon standing before the assembled Riverlords and army.

In one of the finale’s most significant moments, Daemon knelt before her and publicly reaffirmed his loyalty, ending the power struggle that had simmered between them throughout the season.

Why Did Alicent Secretly Meet Rhaenyra?

Alicent secretly met Rhaenyra in the Season 2 finale because she had become disillusioned with the war and wanted to prevent even greater bloodshed. After learning that Aemond had effectively seized control of the Greens and was willing to continue escalating the conflict, Alicent traveled in secret to Dragonstone to speak directly with her former friend.

During their tense conversation, Alicent admitted her mistakes and proposed a deal that would allow Rhaenyra to take King’s Landing with minimal resistance, even though it would likely mean sacrificing Aegon to secure peace. The meeting ended with Alicent accepting the devastating cost of her offer, while Rhaenyra wrestled with what it would take to finally claim the Iron Throne.

What Happens to Aegon Now After Fleeing King’s Landing?

By the end of the Season 2 finale, Aegon II secretly flees King’s Landing after learning that his position has become increasingly precarious. In one of the episode’s closing sequences, Larys Strong helps the badly injured king escape the Red Keep, hiding him in a covered wagon.

Aegon is still recovering from the devastating burns and broken bones he suffered during the Battle of Rook’s Rest, leaving him physically weakened and unable to rule effectively. As they leave the city, Larys warns that Aemond has become a threat to his own brother, making it clear that staying in King’s Landing is no longer safe.

The finale leaves Aegon’s destination unknown, but his departure effectively removes him from the center of the war just as Rhaenyra’s forces prepare to advance on the capital.

What to Expect In House of the Dragon Season 3

Season 3 is expected to begin with the war finally erupting on multiple fronts after the Season 2 finale spent much of its runtime positioning the major players. The final montage shows Team Black’s forces mobilizing across Westeros: Corlys Velaryon’s fleet sails from Driftmark, the Stark army marches south from the North, and Daemon commands a growing host at Harrenhal after securing the loyalty of the Riverlords.

Meanwhile, the Greens are fractured, with Aegon fleeing King’s Landing under Larys’s protection, Aemond consolidating power, and Alicent secretly agreeing to help Rhaenyra seize the capital. The finale’s closing sequence makes one thing clear: the setup is over, and Season 3 will likely focus on the large-scale battles, dragon warfare, and devastating consequences that the Dance of the Dragons has been building toward since the series began.

The new season promises to open with the Battle of the Gullet, with other major book events expected to take place in the next couple of episodes, such as the Fall of King’s Landing, the First Battle of Tumbleton, and the Fall of Dragonstone.
