Spoiler Warning for House of the Dragon Season 3 and George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood
House of the Dragon Season 3 sets the bloodiest stages of the Dance of the Dragons, where nearly every major dragonrider meets a brutal end in George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. From fiery dragon duels in the sky to betrayals and battlefield executions, each death carries weight in the collapse of Targaryen power. These moments are not just pure shock value, but events that changed the history of Westeros forever.
This breakdown focuses solely on those who actually die in the books, excluding the survivors who make it through the war. Here’s how every dragonrider in House of the Dragon dies in the source material that the series is expected to adapt.
1 Rhaenyra Targaryen Is Executed and Fed to Sunfyre
After the Storming of the Dragonpit and the loss of her remaining children, Rhaenyra flees to Dragonstone, unaware of the full extent of Aegon II’s takeover. She is betrayed by Ser Alfred Broome, whose forces kill her remaining Queensguard and capture her upon arrival.
Declared a traitor, she is executed and fed to Sunfyre in front of Aegon II, with her surviving son, Aegon the Younger, forced to witness the brutality. This is one of the most significant deaths in the book, and the cruel yet unforgettable manner of her death is precisely why the series must adapt it as faithfully as possible.
2 Daemon Targaryen Dies in Duel Above the Gods Eye
Daemon meets his end during the Battle Above the Gods Eye, the climactic duel of the Dance of the Dragons. After luring Aemond to Harrenhal, he faces him in the skies above the lake aboard their dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar.
During the chaotic clash, Daemon leaps midair onto Vhagar and drives Dark Sister through Aemond’s eye, killing him instantly. The dragons then crash into the Gods Eye, and both riders are lost, with Daemon’s body never recovered. Tragedy aside, his death is one of the most iconic moments in the lore, turning what could have been just another battlefield kill into legend.
3 Jacaerys Velaryon Gets Hit at the Battle of the Gullet
Jacaerys’ death in House of the Dragon was almost similar to the book version. During the Battle of the Gullet, he initially gained the upper hand and unleashed dragonfire against the Triarchy’s fleet. However, the book says his dragon Vermax is brought down—either by a crossbow bolt to the eye or a grappling hook—causing it to crash into a burning ship.
Jace survives the fall briefly, clinging to the wreckage, but is ultimately struck by repeated Myrish crossbow quarrels before sinking into the sea. Many people died that day, but no demise was as devastating as that of the young prince, cutting down Rhaenyra’s heir before he ever had the chance to rule.
4 Aegon II Targaryen Is Poisoned After the War
After a meeting of the small council, Aegon II retires to his litter to be carried to the royal sept, drinking his usual Arbor red along the way. Upon arrival, he is found dead with blood on his lips, indicating he was secretly poisoned during the journey. The true culprit is never confirmed, though several powerful figures are suspected of conspiring to end his reign and prevent further conflict.
During the aftermath known as the Hour of the Wolf, those believed responsible are arrested when Lord Cregan Stark arrives in King’s Landing to restore order. One can say that Aegon’s death was a final act of quiet political violence that mirrors the chaos of the war itself.
5 Aemond Targaryen Is Killed by Daemon in Dragon Duel
Aemond perishes during the Battle Above the Gods Eye when he confronts Daemon in a final dragon duel. Riding Vhagar, Aemond engaged with Daemon aboard Caraxes in a brutal aerial clash over the lake, with the Rogue Prince leaping from his dragon to the other, tearing off Aemond’s helm and striking Dark Sister sword through his nephew’s blind eye.
The dragons then crash into the Gods Eye, sealing both riders’ fates. Years later, Aemond’s body was found from the depths of the lake, still strapped to the dragon’s saddle and the sword driven hilt-deep through his eye socket. One can argue that this wasn’t a clean heroic duel, but a catastrophic end of a legendary rider and his ancient dragon.
6 Helaena Targaryen Jumps From Her Room in Maegor’s Holdfast
One of the most heartbreaking deaths, Helaena’s suicide is marked by overwhelming grief following the murder of her son. In Fire & Blood, she becomes increasingly withdrawn and broken, ultimately leaping from her chambers in Maegor’s Holdfast and dying after getting impaled on the spikes below.
Her death is not a battlefield moment but a quiet collapse under personal trauma, reflecting how the war destroys even those not directly fighting. It triggers unrest in King’s Landing and deepens the sense that the Targaryen civil war consumes everyone, not just soldiers or dragonriders.
7 Daeron Targaryen Dies Mysteriously During the Second Tumbleton
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBODaeron dies amid the chaos of the Second Battle of Tumbleton, though the exact circumstances remain unknown. Conflicting accounts claim he was killed while escaping his burning tent—either struck down by an enemy with a morningstar or sword—or crushed when the collapsing tent fell on him. His body was also never conclusively identified.
Several pretenders emerged during the reign of Aegon III, claiming to be the lost prince. Although these claimants were ultimately proven to be impostors, the rumors endured because of the uncertainty surrounding Daeron’s fate. This only proves that not every major character receives a legendary ending, and even a prince can vanish without certainty.
8 Addam of Hull Fought Tessarion & Vermithor Atop Seasmoke
One of the true loyal allies of Team Black, Addam of Hull sacrificed himself by fighting to the end despite being falsely accused of treason. Riding Seasmoke, Addam launches a desperate attack against the far larger dragons Vermithor and Tessarion.
The three dragons crash to the ground after a brutal aerial clash, killing Seasmoke and mortally wounding the others. In the story, Addam is one of the few who earns his honor through his actions, not his birth. Hopefully, House of the Dragon will portray his death as heroic as possible, especially after he proved himself a trustworthy dragonrider.
9 Hugh Hammer Is Slain by One of the Caltrops
As one of the betrayers, Hugh Hammer deserves his fate after he turned on the Blacks and declared his own ambition to wear the crown. While the character in House of the Dragon doesn’t seem like his book version, it’s possible that he would ultimately shift allegiance.
In the lore, Hugh underestimates the growing conspiracy against him. Before he can press his claim, he is struck down by Jon Roxton, one of the Caltrops, during a surprise attack. His death abruptly ends his bid for kingship, although it is uncertain if the series will go down this path seeing how it depicts Hugh on screen.
10 Ulf White Dies After Drinking Poisoned Wine
Ulf White survives the fighting at Tumbleton only to meet a far less glorious end. After betraying Rhaenyra, the dragonseed grows complacent, spending his days feasting and drinking while riding the mighty Silverwing. His indulgence makes him an easy target, and he is secretly poisoned with tainted wine during a banquet.
Unlike many tragic figures in the Dance, Ulf’s downfall is difficult to mourn, as his ambition and disloyalty ultimately catch up with him. His fate serves as a reminder that in the brutal game of thrones, opportunists rarely outlive the chaos they help create.
