Harold Perrineau plays the plagued Sheriff Boyd of Fromville in MGM’s hit horror show FROM. Witnessing psychologically terrifying sequences with every season, the actor admits that horror isn’t his slice of cake. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Perrineau states:
I’m not a horror person. I don’t wanna sleep and think about that stuff. I don’t want screams and blood.
The actor has had a prolific career, culminating in the lead role of FROM, which appears to be paying off well for the star. He isn’t new to horror, having voiced Blade in Marvel Anime. However, the star’s thought process for choosing a role makes him want to “stretch” himself as an actor, always looking to break stereotypes. Does the character Sheriff Boyd break the shackles? Why did he agree to the role? Let’s hear from the man himself.
Why Harold Perrineau Agreed to FROM
Sheriff Boyd is the glue of Fromville, keeping everyone together when chaos breaks out (which happens all the time). After admitting to Entertainment Weekly that he isn’t a horror guy, he stated the reason for taking the role:
It was a chance to lead a show, that was a good thing. Haven’t done that in quite some time. And lead a show with a character that I think is really compelling.
Harold Perrineau’s previous role was as Dean in TNT’s Claws. Despite pulling off a powerful performance as an autistic character, the show never really took off. Having ended with just four seasons, FROM arrived at the perfect moment for the actor to take things to the next level, this time as the anchor.
Perrineau’s performance in FROM genuinely sees him break the Sheriff stereotype. Sure, he has to be commanding and uphold the laws of the town, however… Season 4 of FROM sees him absolutely break down in the face of the unknown, showing us a fragile side to authority. Being the town and the show’s lead, Perrineau as Boyd convincingly pulls off a performance that is both vulnerable and leader-like.
The actor also cited Lost alums Jack Bender and Jeff Pinkner as reasons for joining the show. Despite an aversion to horror, he appreciates the stories that the two tell in Lost and The Matrix.
Harold Perrineau’s Current Stance on FROM
A still from FROM | MGMAfter successfully playing Sheriff Boyd for four whole seasons of FROM, Harold Perrineau has mixed feelings about playing the role. Speaking to Mama’s Geeky, he talks about being fully committed to the truth of the harrowing role, and this often results in sad outcomes:
But the truth is, it kind of sucks! It hurts my feelings, and I walk around really sad a lot. There’s a lot of drinking that happens... You have scenes that go on for days, and you’re just like, “I just want this week to end.”
We don’t blame Perrineau for feeling this way. FROM frustratingly moves in circles where the townfolk are given hope, only for it to be squashed in an unimaginable way. The show’s atmosphere is dreadful and depressing, but that’s to be expected from a horror series.
Harold Perrineau made sure to remind us that he remains excited to play the character every year, enjoying the company of the cast as well. FROM ended Season 4 on a devastating note, with the death of many pivotal characters. The Man in Yellow is plotting his endgame move, meaning that Boyd is about to have his most intense arc in Season 5 of FROM.
