5 Games Fans Have Been Waiting More Than a Decade For

Short and cheap development cycles will soon become a myth with the way the gaming industry is progressing, and some of the following examples further prove that even an unusually long production cycle can be accompanied by radio silence and repeated delays. Some video games come out in 3-5 years, while others linger in development for nearly a decade, much to the frustration of players.

With that said, here are 5 titles that players have been waiting for more than a decade and are still testing players’ patience.

1 Beyond Good & Evil 2

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a strange case, as it was announced way back at UbiDays 2008. Fast forward to 2017: it was revealed again during Ubisoft’s E3 presentation with a cinematic trailer. Skip ahead to 2026, and we have no information beyond the fact that it’s still in development. We’re inching closer to the two-decade mark as time progresses, and new gameplay or details about the anticipated open-world prequel are nowhere to be found.

Ubisoft’s major restructuring earlier this month led to the cancellation of multiple titles, but Beyond Good & Evil 2 was not one of them, so it’s evidently still in development. So, fans have effectively waited more than a decade for it, but to no avail, and it’s genuinely ridiculous to think that we’re getting GTA VI before it.

2 The Elder Scrolls VI

The Elder Scrolls VI was first acknowledged by Todd Howard himself in 2016 during YouTube’s Live at E3 stream, confirming that Bethesda was making the game. However, he did confirm that it wasn’t coming anytime soon. Despite the RPG being officially announced with a teaser trailer during Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference, it didn’t enter active production until Starfield was released in 2023.

Skyrim launched back in 2011, and more than a decade later, the sequel remains in development. The good news is Todd confirmed earlier this year that The Elder Scrolls VI will return to Bethesda’s classic RPG roots rather than doing something like Starfield. It’s hilarious to think that the last mainline entry in this series launched before GTA V, while its sequel won’t arrive until after GTA VI is already out.

3 Grand Theft Auto VI

After more than a decade of waiting, Grand Theft Auto VI is finally slated to launch on November 19 this year, with pre-orders now live for both Standard and Ultimate Editions. Preliminary production work began in 2014, while it entered early development in 2018 after Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch, and it wasn’t until 2020 that it entered principal production. However, fans have been waiting for this game since 2013, and 13 years later, we’re finally getting it.

Numerous rumors and leaks plagued the development up until it was formally revealed in 2023, and now, Rockstar is describing it as “the biggest, most immersive evolution in the Grand Theft Auto series”. Less than six months remain until it launches, but fans had already crossed the decade mark in their wait years ago.

4 Star Citizen

Star Citizen was announced in 2012 by Cloud Imperium Games, followed by a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, which raised over $2 million USD. More than a decade after its announcement, it has remained in early access since 2017 with no concrete launch date in sight. However, director Chris Roberts did confirm last year in an interview with LaPresse that Star Citizen is aiming for a 2027/2028 launch.

Star Citizen had amassed over $1 billion USD in combined crowdfunding and early access sales by May 2026. Despite the massive investment, the full launch still appears to be years away, and thanks to the unusually long development cycle, fans are still waiting to experience this multiplayer space simulation game.

5 Project Awakening

Project Awakening was announced as a “high-end console game” by Cygames back in 2016 at the Cygames Next event, but as time went on, details became more scarce. After a short gameplay teaser shown privately at E3 2018, the game was officially announced that year as an action fantasy RPG for the PlayStation 4. The game was described as an open-world title with RPG and multiplayer elements, with a primary focus on combat.

Fresh footage was shown in the Cygames Tech Conference session back in 2021, after which, in 2024, Cygames’ parent company, CyberAgent, listed Project Awakening in its financial documents, and that was it for details about the game. What followed was radio silence and uncertainty, as the game’s official website still features the PS4 logo while we’re actively nearing the end of the PS5 console generation.
