Obsession is not showing any signs of slowing down after its historic theatrical run. The independent horror movie sensation became 2026’s highest-grossing horror film and the 7th highest-grossing movie overall globally ($374.4 million per Box Office Mojo, as of July 2, 2026). If all that weren’t enough, it is also Focus Features’ highest-grossing release ever (via Deadline).
Obsession made its digital debut on June 30 and has already climbed to the top of the iTunes movie chart as of July 2, 2026. This indicates that audiences are not yet done with this movie, which is written and directed by Curry Barker.

This feat is even more impressive given that the film Obsession had a paltry budget of $750,000 (according to The New Yorker). Its amazing box office multiplier ensured that it became one of the most profitable films ever and one of the biggest horror originals in recent history. It is also one of the best horror movies of 2026. It is patently clear that much of its success hinged on its great word-of-mouth campaign, which saw people flocking to the theater not only in the first weekend but in the following weeks too.
Obsession received positive reviews too, with a Tomatometer score of 94%. FandomWire’s Richard Valero wrote in his 8/10 review at TIFF 2025, “Curry Barker’s Obsession is a twisted horror love affair with a star-making performance by Inde Navarrette. This is far and away the best horror movie of 2025.”
The film follows Baron Bailey, or Bear (Michael Johnston), who is a socially awkward music store employee who secretly harbors feelings for his co-worker Nikki (Inde Navarrette). He is eager to win her affection, but is uncertain whether she will reciprocate his sentiments. He uses a mysterious artifact called One Wish Willow to make her fall in love with him. His wish comes true, but in the most terrifying way imaginable. As the title suggests, Nikki doesn’t so much fall in love with him as become obsessed. The ending of Obsession finds Bear making a desperate decision.
The film’s theatrical success has sparked widespread discussion as to how independent horror continues to exceed expectations. They make the argument that studios should fund more original ideas, instead of relying on tired old franchises. Backrooms is another good example this very year.
Its Streaming Debut Is Off to a Flying Start
Inde Navarrette’s performance is universally praised as one of the year’s best | Credits: Focus FeaturesThe theatrical momentum that Obsession had has now carried over to PVOD (Premium Video on Demand). After its aforementioned streaming debut, it has climbed to the No. 1 position on the iTunes movie chart. It is an early sign that interest in the horror hit remains exceptionally strong. Fans of horror films who had been waiting for its home entertainment debut are now discovering it, while those who watched it in the theaters are revisiting it. This has allowed the movie to maintain its impressive streak outside of the theaters as well.
The film’s success online also plays into a growing trend that seems prevalent among successful horror films, where good box-office legs lead to an impressive run on the home entertainment front as well. Films like Talk to Me were able to capitalize on new audiences after being released from theaters by making their way to digital media.
Obsession has also positioned Curry Barker as one of the most sought-after filmmakers in modern horror. The writer-director is already hard at work on his next feature, Anything But Ghosts, starring Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw. The supernatural horror comedy follows two fraudulent paranormal investigators whose scam unravels when they encounter a genuine supernatural threat. Barker has also confirmed that the film is set in the same universe as Obsession. It also features a subtle reference to the aftermath of the events in his breakout hit, while still telling a standalone story.
