God of War Laufey was recently announced during the PlayStation State of Play showcase on June 2, 2026. It is an upcoming iteration of the world-famous God of War franchise, where you don’t play as Kratos, but as his second wife, Faye. Death is not the end for the gods, as Faye’s journey continues even in the afterlife. Between finding a way home and making sure that her living family is on the right path, Faye has to deal with two corrupted Gods of War.
PlayStation has revealed 20 minutes of gameplay footage, offering a glimpse of the challenges she faces in the afterlife. While the combat and a rough sketch of the story are confidently visible in the video, there are details that you may have possibly overlooked. We have curated 15 such details from God of War Laufey‘s gameplay reveal that you might want to check out. Let’s take a look at them below.
1 Everywhen is the Key to Multiple Mythologies
Mongolian and Egyptian Gods of War | Image via Santa MonicaIn the gameplay reveal, it is shown that all Gods go to Everywhen after death to experience their afterlife. So this is also where Faye goes after her cremation in Midgard (shown in 2018’s God of War). Shortly after exploring Everywhen for a while, Faye gets captured by two evil Gods of War called Begtse and Sekhmet.
Both of the above warriors are from different pantheons. Begtse comes from the Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhism, whereas Sekhmet is the Egyptian Goddess of War. While the rumors of God of War going to Egypt were strong since Ragnarok concluded, the entry of Mongolian mythology was surely a surprise. The Mongolian and Egyptian gods coexisting in Everywhen is a subtle hint that other mythologies exist in God of War’s expanding universe.
2 Laufey Pays Homage to the Greek Era Combat
Faye’s combat prowess | Image via Santa MonicaCombat has been a core mechanic in all God of War games. Hence, bringing a similar thrill to God of War Laufey‘s combat system was a top priority for the developers. As they have mentioned, the team has combined the “movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era” to present a fresh experience to the fans.
Where Kratos hits hard and with his bunches and blades, Faye uses magic, agility, and her strength to take down enemies. Moreover, a lethal arsenal is also something this power couple shares.
3 There’s a Lot Behind the Mask
The mask resembles the one in Ragnarok | Image via Santa MonicaThere’s a brief segment in the gameplay reveal where Faye comes across a corpse wearing a mask. It looks identical to the mask that Odin was looking for during the events of God of War Ragnarok. Faye’s surprising reaction after finding the mask may have some sort of connection with Odin’s obsession. Perhaps she already knew what the All-Father of Norse mythology was after.
4 Phranque and Rue are New Mimir and Atreus
Rue and Phranque | Image via Santa MonicaAfter getting imprisoned for a short period in Everywhen, Faye meets a Ribbon (attached to a sword) called Rue and a Cube called Phranque. Both of these aren’t just talking weapons with a personality, but they’re more of Faye’s companions. Most importantly, they both carry wisdom that could help her fight against evil. This is something Mimir would do while dangling from the hip of the Ghost of Sparta.
You will be surprised by the names that have voiced these characters. Do check out our guide to find out the voice actors who have given their voices to bring Rue and Phranque to life in God of War Laufey.
5 Surprising Alliances Await in Everywhen
This kid might play a crucial role in the story | Image via Santa MonicaSeveral godlings are being imprisoned and labeled “pets” by the evil gods in Everywhen. While Faye was imprisoned, too, she quickly managed to escape the cage with her powers. Apart from her, several other godlings are also being caged in this realm. This automatically makes them a potential ally to Faye, who shares a common goal of resisting the villains. While Phranque and Rue are two of the first companions, chances are that she could possibly meet others on the way.
6 Faye Has Doctor Strange-Like Powers!
Faye’s magical power | Image via Santa MonicaBeing the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye possesses great magical powers that even brought the likes of Thor to their knees. One of the coolest magical powers she has is detaching one’s soul from their body. This is something MCU fans will find relatable to Doctor Strange’s Astral Projection ability. Remember the part where the Sorcerer Supreme removed Spider-Man’s soul from his body in Spider-Man: No Way Home? It’s exactly like that.
7 No Spartan Rage
God of War Laufey‘s first boss | Image via Santa MonicaThe Spartan Rage ability is something that flows in Kratos’s family. While this gauge-specific ability lets Kratos enter a powerful and invincible state, it works differently for Atreus. For him, his rage lets him shapeshift into a wolf and a bear. However, no similar ability is found in Faye’s arsenal in God of War Laufey‘s gameplay reveal. This is a major change in the combat system that most players haven’t experienced yet.
8 The Ribbon is Protective
Rue, the Ribbon being protective of the sword | Image via Santa MonicaRue, the Ribbon attached to Faye’s new sword, is protective of the weapon. She was hesitant even before letting Faye wield it in the gameplay reveal. This speaks volumes about the nature of Rue, as she won’t let the weapon get into the wrong hands.
9 The Sword Has Mysterious Powers
Faye’s sword is mysteriously powerful | Image via Santa MonicaThe new sword that Faye gets after breaking the cage does more than just cut enemies in half. It has some sort of importance, or it can trigger a major event in the game. Even the kid that Faye frees from the cage says, “that sword is more than you think it is” during an interaction. Apart from that, Begtse also warns that she doesn’t know what she’s wielding. This is enough evidence to prove that the sword has a bigger role to play in the story.
10 Faye’s Clothes are Burnt
Faye waking up in Everywhen | Image via Santa MonicaOne of the most iconic details hidden in plain sight is Faye’s burnt clothes at the beginning of God of War Laufey. Her burnt clothes in the opening scene are a direct reference to her funeral scene in 2018’s God of War. Since she was burned during her funeral and she wakes up directly in Everywhen after that, it’s a great attention to detail from the developers.
11 Faye Depends More on Technical Combat
Faye showcasing her combat skills | Image via Santa MonicaA God of War game where brute strength is not a primary aspect sounded impossible until God of War Laufey was revealed. Unlike Kratos’s fighting style, which is more hard-hitting, Faye uses her mobility to take enemies down. Although she has super strength like Kratos, she relies on athletic moves and airborne attacks to damage her opponents. Her movement is lighter and faster than Kratos’, which gives a fresh feel to the combat.
12 Enemies Don’t Have Health Bars
Missing health bars in fights | Image via Santa MonicaAnother combat-related detail that you may have possibly missed in God of War Laufey is the missing health bar for enemies. While fighting against the mobs and the starting boss, their health bar didn’t appear on their heads. Previous titles like God of War and God of War Ragnarok did show enemy health bars. Perhaps the developers may add it later in the game; however, for now, it seems like an intentional thing.
13 Faye Thinks There’s a Way Back Home
Faye talking about going back | Image via Santa MonicaIn various segments of God of War Laufey‘s official footage, Faye is seen slightly confused about her existence. It’s like she’s unable to accept the fact that she’s dead. This is also something Phranque tries to explain to her when she was caged. Apart from this, she also wants to return as she rightly thinks that the path Kratos and Atreus are walking on isn’t safe. Given that Faye discovers a mask that potentially is what Odin is after in the living world, her thinking is correct.
14 Everywhen’s Gateway is Closed
Everywhen’s gateway | Image via Santa MonicaThe gateway to Everywhen appears as a huge cubic wall. Those who are dead pass through this gateway to enter this afterlife realm. In the game, it seems like after Faye’s entry, the gateway is closed. The guards who caught Faye lurking around also mentioned that the gate is now closed, and by their tone, it felt like it was a mysterious calamity. Could this gate be the path to Faye’s exit from Everywhen? Or is it just a one-sided door? This secret will only be revealed once the game releases.
15 Faye is Possibly Nerfed in Everywhen
Laufey could be nerfed in God of War Laufey | Image via Santa MonicaDuring one of the segments in God of War Laufey‘s gameplay reveal trailer, Faye is seen fighting against some flower-like enemies. In this part of the video, she says that defeating these enemies “shouldn’t have been that difficult.” By her tone, it’s pretty evident that she’s surprised by the amount of effort it took to defeat these mobs.
The only possibility that it took more effort to beat them is either because of temporary weakness, or maybe because she’s nerfed. The latter makes more sense, as her condition seemed fine when fighting with agility. Moreover, since Santa Monica likes to mind the details, there must be a deeper meaning behind this possible nerf. Only one way to find that out, and it’s by playing the game.
Faye has always been a worthy protagonist for the series! Players only heard of her bravery through NPC interactions in God of War Ragnarok. Thankfully, we will now get to experience her prowess firsthand in God of War Laufey. The gameplay reveal gave us a nice look at her capabilities and more. Also, with all these missed details now brought into light, you may now have a deeper perspective on the game.
