Beginning July 6, one daily round trip between Stratford and Toronto will be offered on the Kitchener GO line in an attempt to relieve some of the gridlock on Hwy. 401.

The Kitchener line extends westward from Toronto Union Station through Etobicoke, Brampton, Georgetown, Acton, Guelph and Kitchener, though train service mostly starts and ends in Brampton during off-peak hours.
The new weekday service will support commuters going to work and school in Kitchener, Brampton and Toronto, with a morning trip from Stratford to Union stations and a return trip in the afternoon.
Weekend service will also support visitors wanting to explore Stratford, most notably the world-renowned Stratford Festival (which runs from April 21 to Nov. 1 this year), with a morning trip from Union to Stratford and a return trip in the evening.
“Bringing GO service to Stratford will make it easier for people to travel to Toronto for work, school and tourism, while also giving Ontarians and visitors a convenient new way to experience Stratford’s world-class attractions and culture,” Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, said in a news release.

Previous train attempts past Kitchener
A pilot project was launched in 2021 to extend service to London, with stops in Stratford and St. Marys, but was discontinued two years later.
The Kitchener Line expansion is part of the province’s $70-billion investment.
In November, the province launched the first-ever weekend train service between Toronto and Kitchener.
It previously announced it had reached an agreement-in-principle to acquire more than 20 kilometres of the Halton subdivision on the Kitchener Line, as it moves to deliver all-day service as part of the Kitchener Extension Project.

More trains to Kitchener
Starting on April 27, a second GO train will travel from Union Station to the Kitchener GO station on weekday mornings.
The train will leave Toronto at 8:49 a.m. and arrive in Kitchener at 10:26 a.m., Metrolinx said on its website.
Additionally, a new eastbound afternoon trip will also be added as of April 27, leaving Kitchener at 3:43 p.m. and arriving in Toronto at 5:17 p.m.
“Schedules are adjusting to better reflect actual travel times across our entire network on all lines,” the update from Metrolinx said.
“Some trips will depart up to two minutes earlier or later, depending on the station you are departing from. Be sure to check schedules before you travel.”
