Gillian Anderson is back to solving mysteries after fame found her with The X-Files with Netflix’s upcoming thriller flick, Animals. Directed by Ben Affleck, Animals features Affleck in the leading role as Mark Kimball, the mayoral candidate and father of a kidnapped son who has a few hours to come up with the ransom money.
Although plot details regarding the character of Gillian Anderson haven’t been revealed much, we do know that she will be portraying the role of Dayle Burton. According to Entertainment Weekly, Anderson’s character is a mysterious consultant specializing in kidnappings.
The movie was initially announced in 2024, and two weeks before the movie was supposed to start shooting, Affleck got cold feet and decided to pull the plug.

With an original storyline co-written by Affleck, Billy Ray, and Connor O. McIntyre, the cast and crew were two weeks away from shooting when Affleck heard about Spike Lee and Denzel Washington’s Highest 2 Lowest.
Sharing similar themes of a son being kidnapped and a rich parent having a few hours to come up with the ransom money, Affleck wanted to avoid any perception that he was stepping on copyrighted material. Speaking to EW, the Air star noted that when he learned Highest 2 Lowest was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, he freaked out.
We were two weeks from shooting, and I was like, ‘We’re not doing it,’. It’s hard enough to make a good movie. You don’t need those kinds of headwinds.
A few months later, Affleck decided to pick up the project again because he wanted to tell this story. However, Matt Damon had already committed to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, leaving Affleck with no choice but to pick up the lead role.
To avoid controversies, Jennifer Garner was replaced with Kerry Washington, while Gillian Anderson was cast as the mysterious detective known for handling kidnapping cases.
Gillian Anderson’s Animals Follows the Classic Artists Equity-Netflix Deal Format

Given the premise of Animals, we can’t help but notice that the 2026 movie might follow the proven-successful formula that Artists Equity applied in their 2026 flick, The Rip.
In fact, Matt Damon has pointed out that Netflix movies are forced to reiterate the plot “three or four times in the dialogue” to account for people being on their phones. Naturally, we are pretty confident that Animals will start off right in the most intense of moments, as it will follow Affleck and Washington scrambling for money while Gillian Anderson tries to find the culprit behind it.

Animals will be released on October 9, 2026, on Netflix.
