Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoilers from From season 4 episode 9 ahead!
FROM Season 4 Episode 9 delivered the best episode of the season so far. We saw Sophia / The Man in Yellow double down on the “games” they enjoyed playing with the townsfolk of Fromville. The ending of this episode saw Ellis find a photo of Sophia from a previous cycle of the town, leading her to threaten him. Clara is promised a way out by Sophia if she cooperates, making her a mole in Sophia’s next move: destroying the town.
With thematic elements executed well into the narrative and a series of actions that were planned since the start, The Calm Before is aptly titled for the episode name. The Man in Yellow enjoys the repetition of cycles, with each one ending in a massacre. Slowly turning the minds of Fromville inside out, things always lead to death and destruction.

The Man in Yellow’s Mind Games Explained
The Man in Yellow morphed back into Sophia after the harrowing encounter with Tabitha at the end of Episode 8. The mind games that were sewn all through Season 4 of FROM are starting to take effect. The theme of this episode is choosing what to believe despite knowing that the town plays tricks on each person’s mind.
Ethan very perceptively points out that the image of his father appearing after his death could very well be The Man in Yellow playing mind games with him. Either way, he tells his mother to believe in what her gut tells her to be true, showing strength despite being a child.
Sophia’s deception reaches new heights, as she now takes over two more victims: Clara and Fatima. Using the former to poison the latter, the episode tragically saw Fatima being affected by the blood of The Man in Yellow after Boyd prays that no harm befalls her or his son.
Henry is the most tragic of the lot, stuck between two different realities in his head. With his “other” reality pushing him to disconnect, Henry might be forced to kill the real Victor. The thought of doing this sends him into a frenzy, pushing everyone away when he clearly needs help.
The latest episode of FROM very expertly delivers the theme of belief that things will work out, making The Calm Before an apt title for what’s to come.
FROM S4E9: The Calm Before Season Finale
A still from FROM | MGMWe’ve reached the penultimate episode of Season 4 of FROM, with Boyd and the folk of Fromville executing the dangerous plan following Jade’s revelations. With Tabitha getting a visit from the children in white, she is convinced that Jade and she are the only two people who have to venture into the chambers.
The episode’s final scene gives us a cliffhanger, alluding to a very real risk that the creatures of the night might get to them before they are safe. Boyd and a set of townsfolk are planning to remove the Bottle Tree from above them, but Victor’s visit from the Boy in White suggested that this is bad.
If we connect the dots, there is definitely a high chance that things will go wrong because of one fact admitted by Sophia in this episode. She states that the town functions on rituals, meaning that the burial site and the Bottle Tree could very likely be an important ritual place.
The Man in Yellow also suggested that Tabitha is about to do something different in this cycle, never done before, and he says this with a smile. With Jade and Tabitha down in the cavern, and Victor demanding that the tree not be removed, could this mean that we are about to see new horrors unleashed?
Sophia is visibly upset that it is just Jade and Tabitha down in the cavern, so this still gives us some hope that things won’t go entirely wrong. However, the folk above could potentially make things worse any minute, turning the finale into a nightmare fest.
