Well, FRIENDS star Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed the role of Janice Hosenstein in the show, owes her iconic catchphrase to Perry’s antics. If it weren’t for Matthew Perry, the world may never have heard the catchphrase ‘Oh My God’.

How Matthew Perry Helped Maggie Wheeler With Her Catchphrase

Believe it or not, the catchphrase ‘Oh My God’ said by Janice throughout the entirety of FRIENDS wasn’t scripted. It was the result of improvisation, trying not to laugh, and, Matthew Perry’s comedy.

Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed the role of Janice, found worldwide fame and acclaim for her machine gun-like laughter (Netflix’s words, not ours) and her iconic catchphrase ‘Oh My God’.

In an interview on This Morning, Wheeler talked about how she came up with the catchphrase and her idea of using it to avoid laughing out loud.

I think it was just this progression of how Janice evolved, and how the writers created the character for me. So, the laugh happened organically in the first rehearsal because I needed to find a way to laugh because Matthew Perry is so funny.

She further continued,

And working with him, I knew right away ‘This guy’s gonna make me laugh on-set. I’ve gotta be prepared’. So I created Janice’s laugh just as a safety measure.

That is how the world was introduced to Maggie Wheeler’s Janice and her iconic laugh and catchphrase. Despite the fame that Matthew Perry found as Chandler Bing, it wasn’t enough to keep his career afloat.

With the show running for 10 years, Perry and the rest of the cast weren’t exactly worried about their future prospects. However, Perry did not know the future that awaited him.

They Stopped Offering Movies To Matthew Perry!

Perry was young and active when he found worldwide fame in FRIENDS. The actor became restless as he wanted to portray a different character than Chandler Bing.

After the show ended, Perry starred in three films titled Numb, Birds of America, and 17 Again. However, all of them were considered failures upon release.

Matthew Perry told Buzzfeed that after his failure, they stopped offering him movies.

I didn’t want to play Chandler anymore. I wanted to do some things that changed it up a little bit. I did about three movies that failed in a row and then they stopped offering me movies.

Although the actor did have some roles to his name, none of his characters found fame as Chandler Bing from FRIENDS. The iconic show aired from 1994 to 2004 and ran for 10 seasons.

FRIENDS received a rating of 8.9/10 on IMDB and an average of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. With Matthew Perry in one of the lead roles, the iconic show is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
