Sushi, a “super cute” four-year-old mixed breed dog, was transferred to the Toronto Humane Society from Montreal a few weeks ago and is ready for his Forever Home.

“I don’t know why he was surrendered in Montreal,” THS spokesman Lucas Solowey said. “I don’t know if he knows any French commands, but so far he is responding well to English.”

For the most part, Solowey describes Sushi as a winner in dog terms.

“He’s pretty interactive, fun-loving, he enjoys being out with people and he loves a good game of fetch,” he said.

“And he’s actually happy to bring the ball back. He has a bouncy, joyful energy to his walks. He’s very engaged with his handler and curious about the world around him and he’s always ready to take in new sights and smells.”

Sushi can get worked up around other animals he encounters

However, if there’s another animal out in the wild, Sushi can get excited.

“I would say in general, Sushi is easy going,” Solowey said. “He can get a bit enthusiastic like when another dog or cat gets his attention. So I would when he does get overstimulated, he may need a bit of guidance to settle. So I would continue training to help him build consistency. I’d say the good news is that he’s already shown that he can walk nicely and stay calm around other dogs when given a bit of space and with time and practice. He’s well positioned to keep improving. So good overall, a little bit of reactivity once he’s overstimulated so maybe some barking, some jumping, but nothing major.”

As for other animals or small children in a prospective home, Solowey says: “I don’t have history of him living with other pets but he is overall well behaved so maybe with a slow introduction, he could be fine with other pets. I also don’t know of lived experience with kids but because of his behaviour thus far I don’t anticipate any issues but I think it’s always good to have a meet and greet.”

Solowey says the perfect home would be an active one.

“I think he would do best in an active home that can match his energy while helping him continue to develop his leash skills,” he said.

“So ideally a family that can be active, go for walks, hikes, maybe keep him mentally stimulated with puzzle feeders or toys or games. So at this point in his life he has a lot of energy to burn so a family that is up for that and who would love playing with a sweet, playful dog.”
