Ex-England international admits Gordon "is not on the same level as Luis Diaz"

Danny Murphy feels the Newcastle winger doesn't bring any great depth or quality to what Bayern already possess on the wings.

Ex-England international Danny Murphy has expressed that he is “a bit surprised” by Bayern Munich's interest in Anthony Gordon.

In an interview with talkSport, the former Liverpool and Fulham man feels the Newcastle United star doesn't improve Bayern's squad. 

“If you look at where Bayern currently stand, I don’t think he’s a threat to the starting eleven. He’s not on the same level as Luis Diaz.

“I like Anthony Gordon; he has great strengths and qualities [in his game], but his level of consistency is a problem.

“He had this fantastic spell in Europe this season, but he also scored a lot of penalties. This is his highest-scoring season,” he said. 

However, Murphy acknowledged the financial benefits for the Magpies winger, who could be in for a big pay increase if he joins Bayern.

"Of course, he would get an incredible contract there. They will pay him more than Newcastle, and moving to a club that is more likely to win titles.

“They will have 60 games, so he will get playing time. From a footballing perspective, I try to see it from his point of view.

"Apart from the financial gain, you will be sitting on the bench now and then,” the 49-year-old concluded on a slightly negative note.

The 25-year-old has been predominantly linked with the German record champions to enable Vincent Kompany to rest key players.
