With the Arrowverse finally coming to an end, the world of DC TV seems a little less bright and a lot more complicated than it did during the era of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman & Lois. The seventh and final Arrowverse spin-off managed to achieve something completely unique by introducing a version of Superman well into his second act who returns to his hometown of Smallville after years of fighting crime in Metropolis.

Now, as the red-caped superhero finally prepares to launch into the sky one last time, the fans of the CW series seem to be at a loss regarding how to bid one of their favorite characters farewell for the last time. Of all the iterations that have existed over the past 46 years since Christopher Reeve first took on the Superman mantle, Tyler Hoechlin’s version is most certainly one of the best to have graced the screens.

Superman & Lois Heads Into Battle One Last Time

Although the story of Superman has been overdone in pop culture since the era of Richard Donner’s 1978 movie, there has hardly been a rendition of the Man of Tomorrow who embodied hope as Tyler Hoechlin’s version did. The hero finds himself in a position of absolute respect as well as vulnerability as he steps up to the plate as a husband, father, and protector serving his destiny.

In the meanwhile, the DC series takes on a whole new meaning with Superman ready to hang up his cape and put an end to his days as the Man of Steel. Assuming that the final season of Superman & Lois aims to provide the ultimate closure to the fans, the story might just end with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman retiring and passing down the mantle to Jordan Kent, his teenage son.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Elizabeth Tulloch who portrays Lois was of a similar opinion. When asked about the series finale, the actress claimed:

[It’s] a very emotional episode. There will be closure, and everyone’s going to be crying in the final episode of the series.

Moreover, showrunner Brent Fletcher too expressed his perspective on how the fans are going to receive the final season:

I don’t think people are going to think we’re ending the show the way that we are. When it ends and the credits come up, they’re going to be surprised.

Hoechlin’s 4-season CW series comes at the perfect moment before James Gunn’s DCU finally opens up Pandora’s Box and unleashes every story – eccentric or otherwise – to the world. His role as the superhero preceded by Henry Cavill and succeeded by David Corenswet serves as a necessary bridge between the past and the future of DC by helping to smooth out all the wrinkles and grievances that Zack Snyder’s DCEU left behind.

DC Pins Its Hopes on Superman & Lois

Not every version of Superman exists to be adored and deified by fans. That was made evident by Henry Cavill’s angst-driven characterization of the superhero who was too burdened by the grey shades of morality than the righteously optimistic persona that the comics established nearly a century ago.

Superman & Lois comes close to gaining that reputation back for the titular hero after DC dropped the ball with Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League – Snyder’s Cut. The DCEU trilogy focused on the earthly trials and tribulations of Superman while the CW series rewards the character with a message of hope and a brighter tomorrow.

As DC moves ahead into a brand new future, James Gunn intends to send a clear message concerning Superman’s identity by aiming for the roots laid down by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. David Corenswet will embody every bit of charm that was foregone in Henry Cavill’s iteration. Superman & Lois simply helps provide a clean bill of health to the character before DCU reboots the entire franchise and heralds the dawn of a new era.

Superman & Lois Season 4 premieres on October 7, 2024 on The CW.
