When it comes to One Piece, the Straw Hat Pirates are more than a major crew in the series – they are the main focus of the series, with some of the strongest and most evolving personalities on board. However, not everything that glitters is gold, and at the end of the day, they are also human – well, including a Fishman, a Reindeer, a Cyborg, and a Skeleton – but you get our point: everyone has a weakness.
This list explores the weaknesses of every Straw Hat Pirate from the series, from being too emotional and rushing into battle brashly to being unable to raise a finger against women. Here is a ranked list of their weaknesses in the series, ranked by the gravity of the weakness.

10 Franky’s Overreliance on His Self-Modifications for Combat
Franky from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationFranky’s weakness, if one exists, is his psychological need to constantly modify and upgrade his body through self-surgery and mechanical additions. This compulsive behavior occasionally distracts him from crew priorities and has led to situations where he’s vulnerable during his modifications.
His reliance on his mechanical body also means he requires maintenance and repairs that other crew members don’t need, posing another threat – certain technologies or electromagnetic attacks could potentially interfere with his cyborg systems, though this hasn’t been thoroughly exploited in the series. We ranked last because he has the fewest significant weaknesses, and his constant evolution actively works against most potential vulnerabilities.
9 Jinbe’s Potential Loyalty Conflicts and Aerial Combat Weakness
Jinbe from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationThe Fishman, Jinbe‘s unique weakness lies in his complex past loyalties and the potential for conflicts between his allegiances to Luffy and his responsibilities to fishman society – his previous association with the Sun Pirates and later the Seven Warlords created obligations that could theoretically place him at odds with the crew’s goals.
However, these weaknesses are relatively minor compared to those of other crew members, and his strength and experience as a former Warlord make him less vulnerable overall. Ranked ninth because his weaknesses are primarily circumstantial and have been substantially mitigated through demonstrated loyalty.
8 Nami’s Physical Weakness and Overreliance on Weather
Nami from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationNami‘s primary weakness is her lack of physical strength compared to her crewmates – making her vulnerable in direct combat against formidable opponents. She relies heavily on her Clima-Tact weapon and environmental manipulation, essentially reducing her effectiveness when she can no longer leverage weather or technology.
While she’s improved through training and equipment upgrades, she remains the crew’s most physically vulnerable member during physical and up-close confrontation. She’s ranked eighth because her weaknesses are primarily situational and can be managed through smart positioning and tactical support.
7 Brook’s Fragile Skeletal Structure Despite His Immortality
Brook from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationWhile his Yomi Yomi no Mi gave him a reality-altering feature, it also stands as a physical curse: Brook’s weakness as a skeleton is his extreme physical fragility – his bones are brittle and can shatter under sufficient impact or pressure. He takes damage that would be survivable for other humans due to his lack of protective tissues, and his bones can literally break apart during intense battles.
However, Brook’s ability to separate from his bones and his Devil Fruit powers partially compensates for this weakness. His speed and swordsmanship skills allow him to avoid direct hits when possible. So, we’ve ranked him seventh because while severe, his skill and abilities help him avoid situations where his fragility becomes the deciding factor.
6 Robin’s Emotional Trauma and Trust Issues From Her Past
Nico Robin from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationNico Robin’s greatest weakness stems from her traumatic past and resulting difficulty trusting others completely – her previous experiences with betrayal and genocide have created psychological barriers that occasionally affect her judgment and relationships within the crew. A prime example would be during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby Arcs, when her vulnerability was exploited and used to manipulate her into betraying the Straw Hats.
While Robin has grown significantly and developed genuine bonds with the crew, her psychological wounds still occasionally surface, creating internal conflict. Robin has been ranked sixth because, while psychologically significant, it’s been substantially addressed through character development and crew bonds.
5 Chopper’s Loss of Cognitive Processing at Monster Point
Tony Tony Chopper (Monster Point) from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationAfter consuming three Rumble Balls all at once, Tony Tony Chopper‘s Monster Point transformation grants him significant defensive and offensive advantages – but comes with the critical drawback of reducing his intelligence and ability to think strategically. In this form, he becomes barely more than an aggressive animal, losing the cognitive advantages that make him the crew’s doctor and intellectual asset.
He cannot execute complex medical procedures or strategic planning while transformed, and heavy reliance on this form during battle can leave the crew without his crucial support capabilities. We ranked his weakness fifth because the limitation only applies to one specific form, and Chopper has many alternative transformations.
4 Zoro’s Pride and His Overreliance on His Swordsmanship
Roronoa Zoro from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationYes, we know, the obvious weakness Roronoa Zoro has shown in the series is mostly with his sense of direction. Zoro’s legendary inability to navigate or sense direction is consistently portrayed as a serious impediment to the crew’s operations – he becomes hopelessly lost even in straightforward scenarios. But that’s not his only weakness.
Zoro has immense pride – not arrogance, but pride that heavily affects his combat intuitions at times, both positively and negatively. Furthermore, Zoro is immensely strong, but only when he has his three cursed blades in his hands and mouth; he can surely endure heavy blows, but his first isn’t really a great weapon. We’ve ranked him fourth because his weakness is highly situational and his loss of direction is mostly compensated by Nami’s guidance.
3 Sanji’s Inability to Hurt Women in the One Piece Series
Sanji and Black Maria from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationSanji‘s inability or rather refusal to fight against women is a severe tactical disadvantage that enemies have exploited multiple times throughout the series – from Khalifa to Black Maria. His chivalrous nature and attraction make him incapable of harming female opponents – even when they pose genuine threats to his crew’s safety.
While played for comedic effect, it represents a genuine combat liability in a series where women are increasingly prominent as powerful antagonists. His inability to overcome this psychological block – despite claiming he could – demonstrates how deeply ingrained this weakness is. Ranked third because it’s exploitable in combat, but somewhat mitigated by his other abilities and the relatively few female major antagonists.
2 Usopp’s Extreme Cowardice and Physical Fragility
Usopp from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationThe Straw Hat Pirates’ biggest liar, probably the series’ biggest liar, Usopp’s defining weakness is his cowardice, often causing him to hesitate in critical moments despite his loyalty to the crew – this mainly comes from the insecurity of his tragic backstory. Unlike his crewmates, who possess superhuman abilities, Usopp is physically fragile and relies entirely on weapons and tactics for combat effectiveness.
However, Usopp shows growth throughout the series, occasionally overcoming his fears through determination. His sniping skills and inventive weapons provide some compensation, but against physically superior opponents, his cowardice becomes a liability. We ranked Usopp second because both his psychology and physiology are genuine limitations that impact his combat reliability.
1 Luffy’s Inability to Swim and Extreme Recklessness in Battle
Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece | Credits: Toei AnimationMonkey D. Luffy‘s inability to swim is critical – as a pirate, complete helplessness in water contradicts his entire lifestyle and has repeatedly endangered him and his crew. While it’s a common weakness for every Devil Fruit user, he’s second weakness is what makes his first one more lethal; his recklessness is equally devastating.
Because of his head-first approach to fighting, he often finds himself in unfavourable situations, which also includes him drowning more than any other character in the series. Combined with his inability to swim, these two weaknesses create a captain whose greatest enemy is often himself. We ranked him the highest because recklessness and inability to swim equal life-threatening vulnerabilities that directly contradict his role as captain and pirate.
