The Senseis are among the most significant characters in the Naruto anime and manga series, particularly when it comes to influencing the development arc of some of the most iconic and powerful characters. If you really think about it, they are the core reason why heroes and villains exist in the series.
Without further ado, let’s get right down to it. Here are all the Senseis in the Naruto series, ranked from worst to best – based on their teachings, who they taught, and the fruits their teachings bore.
| TITLE | Naruto |
| CREATOR | Masashi Kishimoto |
| RELEASE DATE | October 3, 2002 |
| IMDb RATING (As of April 13, 2026) | 8.4/10 |
| WHERE TO WATCH | Crunchyroll, Netflix |
14 Ebisu Is Just a Basic “Sensei” Tier in the Naruto Anime Series
Ebisu | Credits: PierrotWhile Ebisu is not typically the worst sensei in Naruto, he doesn’t really stack up compared to the others on this list. He is mostly known for being the teacher of Konohamaru’s group, from which Konohamaru becomes a recurring iconic figure in the series later. In terms of teaching, Ebisu is really knowledgeable and disciplined, but he is really rigid as a character and does not really inspire anything. He’s just the typical teacher you expect at a Shinobi school.
13 Kurenai Lacked Major Standout “Sensei” Moments in Naruto
Kurenai Yuhi | Credits: PierrotKurenai Yuhi, the sensei of Team 8, is a genjutsu expert and a really good teacher, which is reflected in Hinata, Kiba, and Shino’s understanding of the basics. However, unlike others, she really lacked any key moments in the anime that can be called a remarkable feat. Additionally, all of her students have mostly grown independently without her guidance. Furthermore, apart from the very start of the series, she was barely on screen and just gave us occasional cameos.
12 Asuma Gave More Emotional Guidance Than Technical Growth
Asuma Sarutobi | Credits: PierrotThe son of the third Hokage, Asuma Sarutobi, was one of the most iconic senseis in the series, especially when it comes to Team 10 – Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji. While he did shape them into powerful shinobi, his teaching was more emotional guidance than technical growth. All three of his students honed their own specific skills, and Asuma was just a supporting hand to them.
11 Yamato Is the Reliable and Disciplined Teacher That Team 7 Needed
Yamato and Team 7 | Credits: PierrotAfter Sasuke’s departure and Kakashi’s hospitalization, Yamato took over Team 7 as their teacher, with Sai as a new addition to the team. One of the reasons he was sent as their sensei was the fact that he was the only one who could control Naruto if the Nine-Tails Chakra leaked. While he was very disciplined and reliable, he was far overshadowed by Naruto’s other mentors.
10 Naruto Would Have Never Made It Without Iruka’s Emotional Support
Iruka and Naruto | Credits: PierrotIruka Umino is probably one of the most prominent and important characters in the entire Naruto series, despite being on the sidelines for most of the anime. He was the first mentor-brother, and later a father figure, Naruto had in the series, who supported and guided him through his childhood. Without Iruka, our protagonist would have been a lonely, abandoned orphan who could’ve turned into a villain as well.
9 Might Guy Transformed Rock Lee Into a Top-Tier Taijutsu Master
Team Guy | Credits: PierrotMight Guy is the most energetic characters you’ll find in the Naruto series. What makes Guy so iconic and lovable is that he is the perfect blend of raw, achieved talent and comedic relief. As a teacher, while he guided Tenten and Neji, his favorite was Rock Lee, as he saw himself in Lee. Guy made sure that Rock Lee never doubted himself and made him a taijutsu master through active involvement and emotional support every step of the way.
8 Orochimaru Was the Controversial Teacher Who Trained Sasuke
Orochimaru | Credits: PierrotWhile he was trained by Kakashi, after abandoning the Hidden Leaf Village, Sasuke found himself under the guidance of a former Sannin and an antagonist of the series, Orochimaru. While Orochimaru was undoubtedly an evil scientist, he was also a good teacher; unconventional, but good. Orochimaru taught Sasuke the use of the Cursed Mark, which is basically a pseudo Sage Mode the deuteragonist can use thanks to his controversial teacher.
7 Tsunade Is an All-Rounder When It Comes to Teaching
Tsunade and Sakura | Credits: PierrotSetting aside her well-known gambling habit, Tsunade actually turned out to be a good sensei in Sakura’s case. For a major part of the early narrative, it felt like Sakura’s character progression halted compared to Naruto and Sasuke, until she went under the guidance of Tsunade. Under the former Sannin, Sakura learnt medical Ninjutsu and combat skills, making her one of the strongest Kunoichi in the series.
6 Hiruzen Trained the Legendary Sannin From the Hidden Leaf Village
Hiruzen Sarutobi | Credits: PierrotHiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, was probably the most knowledgeable teacher anyone could have in the series, and as proof, the results speak for themselves – the Legendary Sanin of the Leaf Village, Jiraya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. However, despite being a great teacher and producing some of the most powerful students, he failed to fully guide Orochimaru, which puts him low on this list. On a technical standpoint, Orochimaru became a major threat to the Hidden Leaf partially because of Hiruzen himself.
5 Tobirama Was One of the Strictest but Effective Senseis in Naruto
Tobirama Senju | Credits: PierrotCredits should be given where credits are due: Tobirama Senju was one of the most technical and methodical teachers in the series. His students include some of the most iconic names in the series – Hiruzen Sarutobi, Danzo Shimura, Homura Mitokado, and Koharu Utatane. Homura and Koharu later became long-term high-ranking advisors to the Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. He was a rather strict teacher with vast knowledge and notable inventions of several powerful Ninjutsu techniques.
4 Hashirama Passed Down the Will of Fire to Hiruzen Sarutobi
Hashirama Senju | Credits: PierrotHashirama Senju‘s teaching style was different. Being a co-founder of the Hidden Leaf Village, Hashirama believed in a more inspiring and supportive approach, rather than the traditional sensei-team dynamics. Growing up during the Warring States period, Hashirama and Tobirama trained and fought alongside one another as pillars of the Senju clan.
While Hashirama served as the clan’s leader, Tobirama was a brilliant innovator in his own right, developing unique techniques like the Flying Thunder God and the Shadow Clone Jutsu independently of his brother’s Wood Style abilities. Furthermore, Hiruzen Sarutobi was also under his wing and inherited the “Will of Fire” from the First Hokage.
3 Minato Was a Genius-Level Mentor With Strategic Guidance
Team Minato | Credits: PierrotWhen it comes to teachers from the Naruto series, only a few actually stack up to Minato Namikaze as a “Sensei”. The Fourth Hokage was one of the most feared and respected among every Shinobi nation, and for good reason. He was an immensely skilled fighter and strategist, qualities he passed down to his students, Kakashi and Obito. Now we all know how both of them turned out – absolute powerhouses.
2 Kakashi Laid the Foundation for Team 7’s Rise in Reputation
Team 7 became the most cohesive and iconic team, starting from a place of total disorganization, thanks to their brilliant mentor Kakashi Hatake. Having trained under the Fourth Hokage himself, Kakashi tested them and didn’t hand it down easily.
Although Sasuke ultimately defected from the village, Kakashi’s mentorship was instrumental to his growth as a shinobi. By teaching him the Chidori and refining his Taijutsu, Kakashi provided Sasuke with the foundational elite skills he used throughout the series; Sasuke’s eventual departure was a result of his personal pursuit of vengeance rather than a lack of progress under Kakashi’s tutelage.
1 Jiraya Trained Three of the Strongest Shinobi in the Series
Naruto and Jiraya | Credits: PierrotJiraya is what we can call a “generational” sensei in the Naruto anime and manga series. Not only was he one of the most selfless and wise people in the series, but he is also the reason why Naruto lived so many battles. Jiraya not only took Naruto under his wing but also taught him everything he knew, as he did the same with his father, Minato, and his other student, Nagato. Not just in Masashi Kishimoto’s series, Jiraya is one of the very best “senseis” in all of the shonen anime genre.
