Boruto: Naruto Next Generations failed as the sequel of one of the most successful anime series of all time. Most storylines and characters from the original  Naruto series were either abandoned or ruined in Boruto, even Naruto’s Talk-no-Jutsu became useless. The special technique pacified many villains, saving thousands of lives at times. It was arguably the strongest weapon in the series.

However, Naruto failed to fulfill one promise he made during one of the most pivotal moments of Naruto Shippuden. It’s a prime example of how Boruto failed to honor the promises, legacy, and the Talk-no-Jutsu of its predecessor.

Naruto’s Talk-no-Jutsu Never Materialized to Reality

This promise dates back to the Pain’s Assault Arc. After Tendo Pain was defeated by Naruto, he met Nagato. They engaged in a conversation where Nagato told him about his life. The war-struck state of Amegakure and how it affected the lives of Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan. They attempted to protect Amegakure without resorting to violence; however, they were attacked by Hanzo.

From being orphaned to losing Yahiko, their lives were extremely tragic. This led them down the path of ruin. At the end of the arc, after hearing how Nagato chose the path of destruction to ensure peace in Amegakure (Hidden Rain Village), Naruto promised him that he’ll fulfill Nagato’s wish. He assured Nagato that once he became Hokage, he would oversee the situation of Nagato’s homeland.

He became Hokage at the end of Naruto Shippuden, and since then, the situation of Amegakure hasn’t changed. It can be said that it has further worsened from what little we have seen of it.

The State of the Amegakure in Boruto

The geographical location of Amegakure made it susceptible to the effects of the wars and disputes between the other villages. Moreover, isolation and refusal of help from other villages didn’t help either. In Shikamaru Hiden, attempts were made to fasten the development of Amegakure under Kakashi’s reign, but to no avail. By the time Naruto became Hokage, the village had been abandoned by most of its inhabitants. This is where Boruto comes into play. There’s hardly any focus on Naruto’s efforts to restore peace after becoming Hokage.

The state of Amegakure is the prime example of it. When Sasuke visited Amegakure with Sai to investigate Kara, he realized the dire state of the village. Naruto failed to fulfill his promise even after becoming the Hokage. It needs to be mentioned that efforts were made to restore order and reform the Hidden Rain Village. However, it seemed like it was put on the back burner, with no follow-ups in Boruto.

Naruto is known to be a character who is hands-on with resolving disputes if it’s within his power. Even against the strongest of villains, he has tried both physical persuasion as well as Talk-no-Jutsu. We have seen how he has dedicated a huge amount of his time to his role as the Hokage. He neglected his family and is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the village. It’s sad to see that the same dedication isn’t directed towards his promises.

This is simply because of how Boruto left many storylines from Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto unattended. The characters have become an empty shell of who they used to be. With how the story is progressing, we might never get to see if Amegakure will ever flourish as Nagato and Yahiko envisioned. Although, we might get more empty promises on how efforts are being made to reform the village.
