SUMMARY

  • In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mads Mikkelsen played the role of a Nazi.
  • During the early days of filming, Harrison Ford ended up very loudly referring to the actor as a Nazi as a joke.
  • In the days following, Mikkelsen had to explain to people that he was not a Nazi in real life.

Mads Mikkelsen has played many villains over the years. From cannibalistic serial killers to Bond villains, and even an evil lion, there is no denying that the man has talent. From his first big role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, he captivated audiences in a way that very few villains have been able to in the Bond franchise.

Since then, he has become Hollywood’s top pick for an antagonist. Although this means that he has gained an immense amount of success, it also seems to have affected his image in some way or another. During the filming of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, something quite odd happened between Mikkelsen and Harrison Ford that made things seriously awkward for the Hannibal actor.

Mads Mikkelsen Played a Nazi

In the 2023 film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mads Mikkelsen played the role of Jürgen Voller. The villain was insufferable in several ways, being downright cruel to those around him. He had an inflated sense of self and worked as a double agent, lying to those around them and tricking them into aiding his agenda.

On top of being racist to the highest degree, Voller was also a Nazi. What took this to a completely different level was the fact that he believed himself to be superior to Adolf Hitler. He had loyalty to no one and cared for nothing but his ‘greater’ goal.

Although there is no denying that he was a horrible person, it is important to remember the difference between the art and the artist. Mikkelsen is known for being an impeccable person. However, it would seem that during one interaction, Harrison Ford forgot this.

Mads Mikkelsen’s Awkward Moment With Harrison Ford

During an interview with Business Insider, Mads Mikkelsen talked about how Harrison Ford can often be quite a goofball. To explain this better, he uses an example of one of their first days filming on the set of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The actor talked about a specific encounter they had that made him extremely embarrassed.

He revealed that once, he was walking up to Ford from far away, while the two were surrounded by people. Since filming had just begun, Mikkelsen was still in his normal clothes, completely out of character. Upon seeing the Hannibal actor, Ford ended up saying one of the most out-of-pocket things possible.

He was just goofy all the time. I remember one of the first days, I was walking on the street in my personal clothes. It was in the studio. There were a lot of people around and he was far away, and then he just pointed at me and shouted, “There’s that Nazi!” And everybody turned around and looked at me and I was like, “Oh geez, Harrison. Now I’ve got to explain to everybody I’m not a Nazi.”

Referencing the character he plays in the film, the Blade Runner actor ended up calling Mikkelsen a ‘Nazi’ in the middle of a crowded place, with no one having the context about why he did so. Naturally, those around them turned to the actor and were convinced that he was a Nazi in real life.

Mikkelsen confessed that, since that day, he has had to explain to people that he is, in fact, not a Nazi, and was simply playing a character.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is available for streaming on Disney+.
