The fandom has earned that reputation. Later, Chapter 1044 revealed Gear 5 and the truth of Luffy’s fruit as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, vindicating long-running speculation that Luffy’s power and destiny were tied to a deeper mythological layer.

Oda’s caution is just as revealing as his praise. He said that once he realized theorists could anticipate story developments so well, he stopped watching them, because their accuracy could “corrupt” his instincts and make him act as if certain things no longer needed to be explained. That tells you something crucial about how he writes One Piece.

The series is not built from random shocks, but from carefully planted clues that are meant to be discoverable in hindsight. When fans connect those clues early, they are not ruining the story so much as proving how consistent its internal logic is. Now, One Piece theory culture exists because the manga has spent decades teaching readers to look for patterns, hidden identities, inherited will, and long-game payoffs.
