Enzo Maresca now doubles down on his Gianluigi Donnarumma stance after latest Man City "mistake"

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has defended Gianluigi Donnarumma erstwhile again pursuing different costly mistake during their 3-2 triumph implicit RB Leipzig successful the Champions League connected Wednesday evening.

The Italian goalkeeper was criticised aft allowing Ridle Baku's effort to bushed him astatine the adjacent post, adding to a increasing database of errors this season.

However, Maresca has shown small denotation that helium intends to reconsider his first-choice goalkeeper up of Saturday's travel to look Nottingham Forest astatine the City Ground successful the Premier League.

What has Enzo Maresca said astir Gianluigi Donnarumma's future?

Donnarumma came nether scrutiny aft City's latest Champions League victory, having been incapable to forestall Baku from equalising soon aft half-time.

The mistake followed previous errors against Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain, raising questions astir the 27-year-old's consistency since arriving astatine the Etihad Stadium.

However, Maresca insisted that the incidental was not a large concern, highlighting the goalkeeper's quality to nutrient important saves astatine the different end.

"It's not a concern, but it's a mistake," the City manager told reporters, via the BBC. "He recognises, helium knows that it's a mistake. And now, successful 48 hours, we person Nottingham Forest away, and we request to beryllium focused connected that."

Maresca was besides asked whether the upcoming planetary interruption could supply an accidental to reconsider his goalkeeping options, but again defended Donnarumma.

"I'm not reasoning astir the goalkeeper situation," helium said. "We're talking astir a mistake, but a fewer minutes before, he's done a prevention that immoderate keeper successful the world, they're not going to bash that save!"

The City brag added that Donnarumma knows his show was "not good" capable but believes helium volition amended successful the coming weeks.

Should Maresca driblet Donnarumma vs Forest?

Donnarumma's caller errors are becoming hard to ignore, peculiarly fixed his struggles with organisation and dealing with crosses into the punishment area.

However, Maresca's options down the Italian are not peculiarly convincing, making a alteration hard to justify.

City allowed James Trafford to permission during the summer, contempt the Englishman's potential, and arguably made their ain concern much analyzable by not retaining a susceptible alternative.

Geronimo Rulli remains the back-up, and despite punishment heroics against Brighton & Hove Albion successful the Carabao Cup, Maresca has already made wide that Donnarumma is his undisputed archetypal choice.

The Italian's shot-stopping quality is besides a large asset, arsenic demonstrated by respective outstanding interventions this season.

Despite the mistakes, it is hard to envisage Maresca dropping Donnarumma anytime soon. The 6 ft 5 shot-stopper needs to amended his consistency, but City whitethorn person to persist with him fixed their existent alternatives.
