On June 5, Canadians can expect to receive the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) – essentially a rebrand of the usual GST/HST credit – meant to provide support for low and middle-income Canadians dealing with the high cost of living.

The handout was announced Friday by Secretary of State for the Canada Revenue Agency Wayne Long and will be part of a larger transformation of the existing GST/HST credit program.
Families and individuals who’ve filed their 2024 tax return and already receive the quarterly GST/HST credit can expect a one-time payment totalling 50% of the full-year value of the existing credit.

According to figures provided by the federal government, a family of four with a net income of $40,000 will see a one-time payment of $533 deposited in their bank accounts on June 5, along with a $272 increase for the 2026-27 benefit year.

A single person who earns $25,000 in net income will get $267 on June 5, along with a longer-term increase of $136 for the 2026-27 benefit year.
The one-time and quarterly payments will benefit upwards of 12 million recipients, the government said.

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will replace the GST/HST credit as of this July.
With all benefits included and including the June 5 top-up, a family of four is entitled to receive up to $1,890 in total benefits in 2026, while a single individual could see payouts of up to $950 by the end of this year.
Eligibility is determined by the CRA based on your declared income on your tax return.
