“Last week, Anthony Fauci notified us that he will not voluntarily testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, even though he had previously agreed to do so,” Paul wrote in a post on X on Monday. “Therefore, today we have issued a subpoena for him to publicly testify.”
Paul noted Fauci would testify in July.

Fauci-Paul feud continues
The subpoena is the first for Paul as chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The senator gained power last year when the panel voted to allow its chair to issue single-sided subpoenas, according to The Hill.
The Kentucky senator has constantly targeted Fauci, once the top infectious disease expert in the U.S., for his role in allegedly covering up the country’s involvement in the viral research in a Chinese lab that he believed created COVID-19, which resulted in the global pandemic.
Fauci and Paul repeatedly clashed during Senate hearings when Fauci was heading the American pandemic response under Joe Biden’s presidency.
Paul has claimed without evidence that the virus was created in a Chinese lab and somehow leaked, and that Fauci and other officials worked together to convince the public that the leak was a conspiracy theory. The senator has also blamed Fauci for millions of COVID-19 deaths worldwide, per The Hill.

Paul has called for Fauci to be indicted for allegedly lying to Congress under oath about gain-of-function research.
Fauci has denied the allegations.
In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Paul said the committee has been negotiating with Fauci “for material and for testimony.”
“This has gone on for some time. He slow-walked us and slow-walked us. Finally agreed to come in voluntarily … then last week he says he’s not coming in,” said Paul. “With this subpoena power, we will bring him in, unless he fights this in court.”

In May, Paul wrote on social media that the statute of limitations for the allegations against Fauci was about to expire.
Fauci has not been indicted by President Donald Trump’s Justice Department. He received a full and unconditional pardon by former president Joe Biden at the end of his presidency, per Daily Mail.
