After 1. FC Köln announced at the weekend that Eric Martel will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, it appears he has already found his next destination.

According to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Sky Germany, Martel has decided to join Mainz 05 on a free transfer and is set to undergo a medical on Tuesday.

Several other clubs, including VfL Wolfsburg, were also reportedly interested in the versatile 24-year-old, but ultimately lost out to Die Nullfünfer.

Martel joined Köln from RB Leipzig in 2022 and went on to make 134 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and providing five assists.
