Landry Pop Auctions, an auction brand tailored to comics, toys, and popular culture in general, discovered a piece of comic book history that completely changed the life of a woman residing in California. While poring through a collection of Golden and Platinum Age comics that had belonged to the woman’s father, who bought them off the rack as a teenager while making money as a paperboy, the brand uncovered something extraordinary.
The brand would go on to auction the collection, called The Paperboy Collection, in honor of its original owner, and in its entirety, it sold for $1.3 million. The heavyweight among these old comics was Detective Comics #27. Why did it take the lion’s share of the valuation? It featured the first appearance of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego, Batman.

The Paperboy Collection earned a significant portion of its total value because of two incredibly rare finds. One was the first appearance of Batman, which sold for $683,200. Another standout was Detective Comics #31, featuring one of the most iconic covers in Batman history, drawn by Batman co-creator Bob Kane.
Both issues were graded by the Certified Collectibles Group, which evaluated their condition before assigning them a grade. The higher the grade assigned by the group, the greater the monetary value of the item being evaluated. Of course, reading and re-reading comic books causes wear and tear, which can lower a book’s grade. Important factors considered include structural defects and aesthetic qualities, such as yellowing paper or fading color.
Detective Comics #27 from the collection received a grade of 4.0, which was impressive for such a rare and historically significant book. Although Detective Comics #31 received a higher grade of 7.0, Detective Comics #27 was far more valuable because it featured Batman’s first appearance.
A Copy of Action Comics #1 Was Sold For $15 Million Just This Year
Action Comics #1 is perhaps the most coveted issue today amongst comic collectors || Credit: DC ComicsThe world of comic book auctions can get wild. First appearances of important characters, costumes, and events can be auctioned for enormous sums. Earlier this year, CGC revealed that it had graded a copy of Action Comics #1 at 9.0, which, given the age of the book, is incredibly rare. While the buyer and seller of this particular copy remained unnamed, Manhattan-based dealers Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect facilitated and negotiated the transaction, which was made public on January 9, 2026. The comic book, which sold for $15 million, was also once stolen from actor Nicolas Cage’s house.
Action Comics #1 features the first appearance of Superman, along with several other characters, some of whom are still part of DC continuity. Zatara the Magician also appears in the issue and has continued to show up in DC storylines, including Blackest Night. Widely credited with ushering in the superhero era, Action Comics #1 typically sells for a great deal because of its immense significance in comic book and literary history.
