Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 17 Review: An Action-Packed Episode with Even Higher Stakes

Episode 17 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm delivers exactly what I was hoping for after last week’s cliffhanger. The action is fast-paced and exciting, but what really stood out to me was how much the episode relied on strategy, deception, and character development instead of simply throwing bigger fights at us.

From Akio’s tense standoff with the Kagemoris to Yuru’s surprisingly clever hostage gamble, the episode constantly finds ways to keep the story unpredictable. It also drops some fascinating lore that makes the daemon system even more interesting than before.

Akio’s Stand Against the Kagemoris Raises the Tension

What impressed me most about Akio’s storyline was that it wasn’t really about winning or losing a fight. Instead, it became a battle of intelligence, with everyone trying to stay one step ahead of each other.

What surprised me most is Jin San. Jin knew from the beginning that Akio was responsible for all these happenings before the Kagemori mansion attack took place. The attack simply confirmed what he already believed. It’s a small reveal, but it makes Jin feel far more observant and calculating than I initially thought.

The twist with the fake Gabby was also interesting. Realizing that Gabby, who everyone has been looking for, is actually a shape-shifting daemon of Makoto Tachikawa was a great move that made me appreciate the episode’s attention to detail even more. Looking back, the clues were there all along, and I always enjoy when a series rewards viewers for paying attention.

The daemon clash between Akio’s Mountain Gods daemon pair and the coordinated attack of other Kagemori members, especially Gabby’s daemon, stole the spotlight in this episode. Even though Akio’s daemon pair was huge in size, Gabriel’s ability to chop anything regardless of size was a poor matchup for Akio’s daemon pair.

The world building in Episode 17 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm takes a step forward with the introduction of Gonzo Kagemori’s abilities. I found the explanation behind Hyakki Yako, the daemon pair which makes it possible for Gonzo to control many daemon pairs without any compatibility problems, genuinely satisfying. Instead of making Gonzo feel overpowered just for the sake of spectacle, the series gives his incredible strength a logical explanation that fits naturally into its power system.

Also, I really liked how the conflict did not become another example of good versus evil. Even when fighting, Jin san tries to capture Akio and his daemon pair, instead of killing them, showing that both sides are operating according to their own beliefs instead of blindly seeking revenge.

Yuru’s Gamble Ends with Fujin and Raijin’s Entry

Yuru’s storyline may be shorter, but I honestly found it to be one of the episode’s strongest aspects. After being kidnapped in the previous episode, Yuru doesn’t waste time feeling sorry for himself. Instead, he immediately turns the tables by taking Shingo hostage and using his phone to demand the release of the captured children.

I genuinely didn’t expect Yuru to come up with a plan like that, and it shows just how much he’s matured since the beginning of the series. He’s still impulsive, but he’s finally starting to think before he acts. Unfortunately, the Daemons of the Shadow Realm also reminds us that clever ideas alone aren’t enough.

Shingo remains calm throughout the entire confrontation before effortlessly escaping Yuru’s grip and regaining control of the situation. The appearance of Shingo’s terrifying daemon pair, Fujin and Raijin, makes that moment even more impactful. These aren’t just another powerful daemon pair – they immediately establish why Shingo is considered one of the most formidable figures in the story. Rather than overpowering Yuru through strength, he dismantles Yuru’s plan with experience, composure, and superior judgment.

I also appreciated that the episode didn’t treat Yuru’s failure as a humiliation. Instead, it felt like another important step in his growth. Every setback teaches him something new, and I think that’s one of the reasons his journey continues to feel so rewarding.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 17 Final Verdict

Overall, I came away from Episode 17 feeling that Daemons of the Shadow Realm is becoming increasingly confident in its storytelling. The action is excellent, but what stayed with me most were the clever twists, meaningful lore reveals, and the steady growth of its main characters.

Akio’s tense confrontation with the Kagemoris proves that psychological battles can be just as engaging as physical ones, while Yuru’s hostage gamble shows he’s finally beginning to fight with both his heart and his head. Add in Gonzo’s fascinating Hyakki Yako reveal and the intimidating presence of Fujin and Raijin, and this Daemons of the Shadow Realm episode never runs out of ways to keep us invested.

If the second cour continues building on these character-driven conflicts while expanding the daemon lore at this pace, I think Daemons of the Shadow Realm is heading toward its strongest run yet.
